Change Your Environment First
Hello, this is Mikity☆.
Have you ever had the experience of thinking, "I meant to do it, but I just couldn't in the end..."?
It's not that your willpower is weak; in fact, it might be that your "environment" isn't on your side.
People are moved more by their environment than by willpower
We tend to think, "I'll do it when I feel motivated," but in reality, we are more strongly influenced by our environment than by our willpower.
If there is a book on your desk, it's naturally easier to read, and conversely, if there are snacks right in front of you, you'll reach for them.
In other words, if you want to change your behavior, the shortcut is to start not by training your willpower, but by setting up your environment.
Changing your environment only requires small adjustments
When you hear "change your environment," it might sound like a big task, but there's no need for that.
For example:
・Place your running gear by the front door
・Keep a notebook and pen out on your desk
・Charge your smartphone in another room
・Put vegetables at the very front of the refrigerator
With just these small adjustments, the hurdle for taking action drops surprisingly low.
Tips for making your environment your ally
The tips are simple:
・Make habits you want to adopt "easy to see and easy to reach"
・Make habits you want to quit "hard to see and inconvenient to do"
For example, if you want to read more, put a book by your bedside. If you want to reduce your social media usage, move the app to the second page.
By just changing your environment a little, you can take action without relying on willpower.
Summary
People are swayed more by their environment than by willpower
Small adjustments are enough to change your environment
The golden rule is "keep what you want to do close, and what you want to quit far away"
Thank you for reading until the end today.
