Timing is the Most Important and Difficult Part
I'm not very good at it, but my 13-year-old daughter loves drawing.
She draws whenever she has time, draws to change her mood when she's happy or sad, and spends her allowance on art books and manga; it really comes across that she loves it from the bottom of her heart.
I think it's the best way for her to express herself, and since I believe having something like that at this point in her life is a great strength, I want to continue supporting her in having art as a part of her life.
However, there was an incident that made me reflect because I had forgotten that.
When my daughter was small, I was also into them, so I actively and repeatedly showed her Disney and Pixar movies and animations, buying quite a few DVDs and digital copies, and taking her to the cinema.
It was good because my daughter enjoyed watching them, and looking back, I feel that as a parent, I must have wanted her to become a child with imagination.
And today, my daughter came to ask if she could subscribe to Disney+. She said there are many movies and animations she's watched before that she wants to watch again, so she asked me to sign up for at least one month. My reflexive reaction was to say, 'That's fine, but how much is it?' (Inner voice: 'I already gave you your allowance, didn't I?'), and I continued with somewhat negative remarks and thoughts, like 'Why do I have to pay for this when you buy books with your own money?'
When I thought about it carefully, the intention I had when I diligently showed them to her when she was small was quite successful, and she is clearly very influenced by them!
It would be amazing for my daughter, who is drawing like crazy every day wanting to brush up her art, to absorb the worldviews of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel from her current 13-year-old perspective, and there is nothing but potential and excitement for what kind of art she will draw!!
I realized this calmly, and without saying anything unnecessary, I was able to sign up for her smoothly without missing her timing.
I can't just say 'yes' to everything in life, so I tend to be on guard, but setting other things aside, I should more simply cherish her timing.
When she was little, I was able to think, 'Watch more and absorb all sorts of things,' but now I find myself saying, 'I'll sign you up, but in exchange, fix this,' or 'Do that,' or 'Be nice to your sister.' I've developed such twisted thinking that I can no longer simply wish for her to absorb various things with her current sensibilities, and I am truly reflecting on that.
That is a separate issue, and I made a promise to myself to happily make positive expenditures of around 1,000 yen.
I will continue to simply support her so that she can keep drawing pictures that she is genuinely satisfied with.☺️
