[Poetry of Learning: Words to Help You Breathe a Little Easier] The Day Our Hearts Were Joined
My appearance is quite ordinary.
Inside my head, ladybugs are doing the samba.
But my mother often told me,
"Takahiro, you have a beautiful heart."
Believing those words,
I stuffed a lifetime's worth of courage into my pocket
and came here.
"So, what are your preferences for a partner?"
Being spoken to by a beauty who looked like a model,
my mind went completely blank.
No, maybe it turned completely blue.
"Uh... yes... I would like someone kind and honest who can accept me for who I am."
Click-clack-click-clack-click-clack-click-clack.
With a speed that made it seem like she had twenty fingers,
she typed away at the keyboard.
"I have found someone who would be a perfect match for you."
With a practiced movement,
as if she were spinning a top, she turned the computer toward me.
What was displayed on the screen
was, honestly speaking, not a beauty.
But somehow,
I felt it.
This person's heart,
through the screen.
More than words listing conditions,
this person's
silence
seemed far more eloquent.
"She is a wonderful person. I would love to meet her."
Married life,
I think,
is just about whether or not
you feel like you want to gently touch each other's hearts.
Today,
a single knot was tied
at this marriage agency.
May your heart, too,
someday
be joined with someone
at the same temperature.

Therefore, I dislike those who are glib. If you say one thing, they have a retort. You cannot win against a silver-tongued person. (Xian Jin, 11/278)
