It Has Become a Friendly Era for Sewing Beginners
*With only one month of sewing experience...*
Perhaps there are things I can write precisely because of that?
That is why I am writing this article.
A month ago, I was a complete sewing beginner who hadn't touched a sewing machine in 20 years.
(Forget sewing machines, I even hated hand-sewing, and embarrassingly, I had avoided even sewing on loose buttons.)
(I bought a sewing machine on impulse, but I was full of anxiety:)
"Can I learn to use a sewing machine without anyone teaching me?"
"I'm clumsy, but will I be able to sew straight?"
"Can I even set it up properly in the first place?"
That was because I still felt that "sewing machines are difficult!" from my middle school home economics class.
"Sewing machines are difficult!"Back then, even sewing in a straight line was hard.I didn't really understand how to set up the bobbin thread either. But once I actually started, surprisingly, even a clumsy person like me was able to make many projects in one month without giving up.

Why is that?
As of 2026,
it has become a friendly era
for sewing beginners.
First, excellent computerized sewing machines.
The sewing machine I usecosts about 50,000 yen.
It handles troublesome adjustments automatically, so even as a beginner, I was able to sew surprisingly straight from the very first day.

And
ChatGPT
I downloaded it to my smartphone and use it for free.
If I tell ChatGPT my budget and goals, it will recommend a sewing machine.
If I ask, "What practice should I start with?" it will create a practice program for me.
If I ask questions with photos like "The thread got tangled!", "The stitches have become loose!", or "Which side of this fabric is the front?", it explains the causes and solutions in an easy-to-understand way with illustrations.
When I consulted it saying, "I got fusible interfacing glue on my ironing board," it even comforted me first by saying, "It's okay. Getting fusible interfacing glue on the ironing board is common in sewing," before giving me advice, haha.

Processes that are hard to understand with just text and diagrams can often be understood through videos.
There are many videos that teach you carefully, and they have helped me many times.
Furthermore,
Online shopping like Amazon and Rakuten Ichiba
While looking at reviews, I can easily choose and buy:
・Books and recipes that are easy for beginners to understand
・Easy-to-use tools
・Fabrics that are easy to sew
...
If it were 10 years ago, there wouldn't have been so many sewing videos on YouTube.
I think I would have given up because I wouldn't have understood how to make things even if I looked at books.
If it were 5 years ago, there would have been no ChatGPT.
I wouldn't have been able to ask anyone why things weren't going well, and I might have given up.
Of course, I make many mistakes.
But now, if I'm in trouble, I can look it up immediately, and if I don't understand, I can ask ChatGPT and it will give me accurate answers.
Therefore,
you don't need to be anxious before you start.
What I wanted to hear most a month ago was
these words.
