The Small Choice We All Watched Over That Day
A small prayer baked into the first festival cake
On this day last year, we celebrated our youngest grandson's first festival.
In the soft spring light, both families gathered for a modest celebration.
I stood in the kitchen with my husband,
baked a cake as I always do, and brought it to the gathering.

He was still so small, unaware of the significance of the day.
Yet, wrapped in warm gazes, his life was truly blessed.
In front of the May dolls, we took turns holding him and taking photos together.
Each of those moments was so precious, it made my heart swell.
We pretended to have him carry the one-sho rice cake,
and gently laid out items for the 'erabitori' fortune-telling ritual.
The little hands that couldn't leave his mother at first reached out to choose something on their own, and everyone there was surprised and laughed.
With every little gesture, smiles naturally spilled out from everyone,
filling the room with gentle joy.
We enjoyed the celebratory meal and cake around the table.
The steaming dishes, the warmth of hands sharing food, and every word exchanged filled our hearts with warmth.
When my own children were still small,
we spent time in the kitchen covered in flour.
I baked seasonal cakes over and over again.
That time has continued unbroken,
changing its form and connecting to this moment right here.
That both families can gather and share the same time like this,
is by no means something to be taken for granted,
and that is why it is an irreplaceable moment I want to hold gently in both hands.
Just by being there, our grandchildren
build soft bridges between people.
I feel new bonds being quietly and firmly tied.
One year since that day.
The time spent in the kitchen,
and the time spent outside,
are shifting little by little, yet continuing gently.
The days we have accumulated do not disappear,
but are quietly handed over to the next season.
I think I will bake a cake again this year.
I want to keep layering these small prayers like this into the future.
