The Day Someone I Met for the First Time Said, 'Thank You for Giving Birth to Her'
There are moments when I talk with my children that my heart feels warm deep inside.
It is when I learn about the kind of people they have met and how they are cherished in their lives.
The other day, on the way home from an art gallery with my daughter, we had a long, leisurely talk for the first time in a while.
Even though it was just casual updates on our lives, as I listened, my heart felt full.
My daughter is surrounded by many friends and companions.
Among them, there is one person whose words remain in my heart no matter how many times I hear them.
I first met that person around the time my daughter was graduating from university.
It was a time when everyone was moving toward new paths, a period mixed with a little anxiety and anticipation.
That day, she walked straight toward me, a stranger, with her arms open and hugged me tightly without hesitation.
And her first words were:
'[Daughter's Name]'s mom, thank you for giving birth to [Daughter's Name]!'
It was so direct, so warm, and so unexpected.
I was so surprised and my heart was so full from these words I had never been told before that I couldn't say anything for a while.
I felt as if I had learned everything about the time my daughter spent in university, the people she met, and the relationships she nurtured, all in that one sentence.
When she first entered university, my daughter reportedly had a group of over a dozen friends.
From there, the group gradually grew, the connections expanded, and even now, they continue their relationships in their respective places.
Most of my daughter's stories are always about 'people'.
Every time I hear one of them, a world I didn't know quietly expands.
What touched my heart in that day's conversation was the story of when that friend who hugged me returned to Japan temporarily from Australia.
Fifty friends gathered together.
Inside a large trunk, she had packed a gift for each and every one of them.
Things she chose while living in a distant country, thinking of each friend's face.
Thinking that she brought them back along with all that weight makes my heart warm.
A person who is direct, warm, and naturally connects people to people.
Every time I learn that such a wonderful friend is by my daughter's side and still remains close to her, my heart is quietly filled.

Looking back, the time spent raising children passed in the blink of an eye.
The days we walked holding hands and the times we laughed together are becoming distant before I know it.
As a mother, there is something I have always wished for.
I hope that these children will meet good people.
I hope they will be blessed with people who cherish them.
There is a limit to what a parent can do.
No matter how much I love them or how much I want to protect them, a parent cannot choose who is waiting for them down the road.
That is precisely why,
'Thank you for giving birth to her'
That phrase I received from her friend became a gift I will never forget for the rest of my life.
The fact that the people my daughter has met cherish her.
And that my daughter herself also lives while cherishing those people.
This child is living, properly loved in this world.
When I could think that, the joy of being a mother quietly spread through my heart.
-------------------------------
To my children.
Thank you for making me a mother.
Having become a mother, I feel a heartfelt sense of gratitude that I am able to live every day amidst warm connections with so many people.
