Hikaru Utada's "Mine or Yours" is relatable and bittersweet
On May 2nd, Hikaru Utada's new song "Mine or Yours" was released digitally.
This song is being used as the commercial song for Ayataka. The lyrics even include the phrase "You like coffee, I like green tea, as always," which brings Ayataka to mind.
It also seems to be a hot topic because it includes the phrase "separate surnames for married couples."
But for me, the line in the second chorus, "I want to be with you forever, but being together every day might be tough," really hit home.
I think this is a phrase that everyone can relate to. Lovers, friends, family... No matter how much you wish to be together, being together all the time can be a bit suffocating.
Putting a feeling that so many people can relate to and have experienced into words and incorporating it into lyrics is very characteristic of Utada-san.
Singing about what everyone is thinking is not an easy thing to do. But Utada-san gently scoops up the vague feelings we carry.
And, Utada-san's lyrics allow you to make them "your own." You can overlap them with a scene from your own life.
That is why I think it resonates deeply in the heart and creates a profound lingering effect.
Listening to the lyrics, "I want to be with you forever, but being together every day might be tough," I'm sure you also had someone vaguely in mind. And, didn't it make you feel a little bittersweet?
The ability to make them "your own songs" is a major characteristic of Utada-san's music, and I think it's wonderful.
By the way, I also love the lyrics, "The more I get used to freedom, the more I feel restricted; why didn't anyone tell us that?"
Utada-san sings lyrics that are like a finishing move with such a nonchalant face. That's what thrills me, and it makes me want to keep listening to her songs and her words forever.
