Golf is also a mirror that reflects yourself | Old Man's Golf Notes
Perhaps that is why I can say I love it.
In the first place, it is a sport of self-responsibility where you report your own score.
It might even have aspects of a sport that forces you to reveal your true colors.
When you can't find your ball,
a ball suddenly drops from your pocket,
and you say, 'I found the ball!'
(This is called 'laying an egg').
A personality that cheats when no one is looking.
When they make a mistake,
they say things like, 'Oh, it was a divot,' or,
'My playing partner moved,'
and in the end, they blame the caddy.
A personality that always blames others.
A personality that excessively boasts about their nice shots.
A personality that laughs at others' mistakes.
A personality that sulks when they are playing poorly,
making those around them feel uncomfortable.
On the other hand,
even if a playing partner makes a slight mistake,
as long as the ball is moving forward,
a personality that calls out,
'Nice!'
Even if a playing partner keeps making bad shots,
a personality that praises their good points, saying,
'That last putt had excellent distance control!'
A personality that naturally repairs not only their own ball marks on the green,
but also fills in divots on the fairway made by others.
A personality that keeps a close eye on their partner's ball,
and helps them look for it.
Well, there are endless examples,
and 'golf' is where you can see all sorts of characters.
That aspect might be one of the reasons why it is valued
as 'business golf' in Japanese companies.
It is rare to spend more than five hours with a business partner,
during the day, and sober at that.
No matter how much you try to put on a front,
you will encounter moments where,
by chance, you see that person's true character.
Both the good sides and the bad sides.
That is why it might be called a 'scary sport'... (laughs)
When I became the head of an organization with a certain number of staff,
my boss told me something like this.
'Whether it's with clients or within the company, if you win a prize at a tournament, don't take it home.'
Of course, that person would also hold a rock-paper-scissors tournament with the participants
and give the prizes to the winners.
Golf is an expensive sport.
For the younger generation who left their families on their day off to participate in a company event,
I want to make it easier for them to go home,
and increase the souvenirs they can take home to please their families.
If a boss acts like this,
you can maintain a good relationship even in business, right?
I believe that is what I was taught.
If you behave like that at a client's golf tournament,
naturally, your company name will stand out and be recognized,
and it will lead to your company's dignity and character being evaluated.
As I wrote here
[[ph↑]]
when you play with a true expert,it almost always comes with a sense of 'inspiration' and 'respect'.
I'm sure they have put in a great deal of effort,
but perhaps once you reach a certain level, you also gain the composure to look around and act accordingly.
'It's just golf, but it's more than just golf'
Even as I get older, my love for golf only continues to deepen~
Thank you for reading until the end.
May your day today be filled with love♪
For this old man,
a like is a birdie, a follow is an eagle⛳️😆
