On Cold Weather Protection 8
When there is a drastic difference in temperature between day and night like today, I thought it might be better to focus on cold weather protection for non-midwinter periods rather than for the peak of winter.
Therefore, while I have previously discussed cold weather protection from outdoor brands, this time I would like to talk a little about cold and wind protection from sports brands.
I was outdoors from this morning, but I didn't feel the need for a down jacket at all, even after it got colder in the evening.
*Today's temperatures were a high of 15°C and a low of 2°C, but I was outdoors when it was between about 8°C and 15°C.
I was wearing a sports brand base layer, a long-sleeved shirt, a stretch jersey top, a windbreaker set (top and bottom), and an event jacket.
(Everything except the event jacket was from the same brand.)
I don't wear tight clothing at all, but because these were true-to-size and highly stretchy, they prevented drafts from getting between my skin and the clothes, so I actually felt hot during the day.
During the day, even the long-sleeved shirt felt hot, and I didn't feel cold at all even when I was outdoors wearing only the base layer.
When evening came, I did feel that my legs were colder than my arms due to the lack of stretch jersey, but it was well within a tolerable range.
Looking at the people around me, I saw some wearing down jackets in the evening, but I didn't feel the need for one at all.
There are several possible reasons for this, but I think it is likely due to whether or not cold air was able to enter.
The people around me wearing down jackets were pairing them with jeans, which supports the hypothesis that they were getting cold from their legs up, whereas I believe I didn't get cold anywhere because I was wearing windbreakers on both top and bottom.
When my body gets cold, the part that feels the most chilled for me is my thighs, so ensuring warmth for my thighs is a big factor.
Why didn't my arms feel cold?
The answer is simple: it's because there were layers of air.
By layering thin sportswear, I created layers of air. Also, the windbreaker and event jacket, which have high windproof properties, fit snugly at the wrists, which I think is a major factor in blocking the north wind and preventing cold air from entering.
Another factor is that I started layering up immediately before my body got completely chilled.
Once your body gets completely cold, the effect of trapping the warmth of your skin surface drops significantly.
I am sensitive to both heat and cold, and I think that worked in my favor.
Sportswear is often criticized when worn by adults, but if you go all-in and wear it for both top and bottom, you won't be criticized.
You just have to avoid things like wearing a windbreaker over a dress shirt or going to places outside your neighborhood in a jersey.
