When I Get Guide Work (In My Case)
It is my third year since obtaining the National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter qualification.
However, the first year
(despite my various efforts) I received absolutely no work,
so in terms of my career, it is practically my second year.
Since last year, thanks to the rapid increase in foreign tourists,
I have been receiving a decent amount of work.
Although I had almost no work from January to March this year,
I was able to work for half of the month in April.
In addition to a company that provides tours for cruise ships, I have contracts with several travel agencies.
For cruise ships,
they ask for my schedule a year or six months in advance,
and I declare the days I am available to work.
Travel agencies usually contact me when they receive bookings from customers,
but recently, I have realized that even from those companies,
work only comes
on specific days.
That is,the days when cruise ships are in port.
The work I currently receive is overwhelmingly from people who,
when coming to Hokkaido by cruise ship,
do not want a group tour and prefer to hire a private guide.
Of course, there are times when I am entrusted with guiding people who travel across Japan over several weeks,
but I have not had many such cases yet.
I wonder if this is unique to rural areas, or rather, Hokkaido (or places like Okinawa, or locations that require another flight after arriving at an airport with many international flights)?
Anyway, it seems that if I want to increase my working days,
I need to secure routes that allow me to be introduced to people other than those arriving by cruise ship.
(Since it just means I only have work when ships arrive, regardless of whether they are groups or individuals.)
For now, I still have my English school,
so I am not increasing my working days that much.
However, considering the future and working during the winter when ships stop coming,
I think that strategy (?) is not wrong.
That said,
there are parts that are beyond my control no matter how hard I try.
Although it is gradual,
the range of my work is expanding,
so I have no choice but to increase the number of travel agencies I work with without rushing.
