It Became a Prescription for My Heart Before I Knew It | Anime Saved Me While I Was on Leave
I am Maruri, a working mom currently on leave.
From the day I fell down the stairs,
my busy daily life was forced to a complete stop.
I spent my days lying down, doing nothing but the bare minimum of movement.
I could only sit up for a short amount of time.
Even if I wanted to turn to food to cope,
I also had reflux esophagitis, so if I didn't restrain myself from my favorite spicy foods and carbonated drinks, it would only come back to haunt me.
The only thing I could do to pass the time without strain
was to
lie down and stare at the screen.
I thought about rewatching 'My Hero Academia',
which I had casually watched with my 9-year-old son,
at a slower pace.
This series brought vitality and color back
to my faded mental state while I was on leave.
(*Please be aware that the following contains spoilers.)
The Moment It Began
There are several scenes that make me tear up no matter how many times I watch them.
In an era where having a 'Quirk' is considered normal from birth, the protagonist has no Quirk at all.
However, he admires heroes more than anyone else,
and even though he is mocked and laughed at, he cannot give up on his dream.
The moment he is told by the hero he admires and respects,
'You can become a hero,'
the whole story began to move.
Watching the protagonist, who keeps searching for what he can do without giving up,
even when he has nothing, until a ray of hope shines through,
makes me tear up with him every single time.
Leaving No One Alone
With hero society collapsing,
the protagonist tries to shoulder the responsibility of saving the world all by himself.
Even so, his classmates did not leave him alone.
The anxiety and anger of the public,
who had become accustomed to being protected, are unraveled by the cries of a girl who is his classmate.
A girl who had been faking who she was
while carrying the burden of living, finds her true self only by becoming an enemy of society.
After closing her heart,
believing that society rejected her,
she opens the door to her heart to a girl who, despite being a hero,
never gave up on wanting to be her friend and kept trying to talk to her.
To the young man who became the worst villain and threatened society,
no matter how much his appearance or form changed,
the protagonist tried to reach out to him,
refusing to dismiss him as just an enemy and seeing him as a human being.
In this story, which leaves no one alone,
regardless of their position or who they are,
"You are not alone"
I felt as if I were being told that over and over again.
As my leave dragged on and on,
it was precisely when I couldn't manage work or housework and felt depressed that
I stared at the screen.
Everyone can be someone's hero
Despairing of society,
the one who saved the heart of a boy
who tried to unleash his power in his sorrow
was not a hero with special powers, but
an old woman passing by.
When the hearts of heroes who leave no one alone
connected with the people,
it was the moment I felt that it would become a kind society
where everyone can be someone's hero.
Conclusion
With limited things I could do during my sudden leave,
I felt like I had fallen through the cracks of society,
and just like anyone else working hard every day where no one sees them,
I felt like I was constantly being encouraged, reminded that everyone is a member of society and a precious existence that is needed.
That must be why I want to watch it over and over again.
I love books, of course, but
through these works,
I felt once again the wonder of
"watching on a screen"
works that have been brought to life with voices.
Thank you for staying with me until the end.
