I have lost to shopping channels many times
The other day, I unearthed a Slendertone from the back of my closet.
I am using it again now, partly as an experiment, but it made me wonder.
“In the first place, why did I even buy this?”
Looking back, I have bought quite a lot of things from shopping channels.
Even now, if a Japanet program is on, I end up watching it.
In the past, I have even bought a Dyson vacuum cleaner and a microwave oven.
Recently, my wife stops me by saying “Here we go again,” so my big purchases have decreased, but when I was young, I loved “Telecon World,” which aired late at night on TV Tokyo.
Among them, the one I cannot forget is the commercial for the car wax “Auriglo”.
It had an outrageous scene where they cooked a hamburger on a car hood and burned it. While I thought, “Does that really happen?”, the impact was immense.
Perhaps the reason I was so drawn to it was because it was a late-night broadcast.
Furthermore, the voice actor for the dubbing was exquisite, and I remember enjoying the rhythmic narration more than the product explanation itself.
As a result of continuing to watch such programs, I also ended up buying a cleaner called “Astonish”.
The pitch was that it removed dirt well and would even keep bathroom mirrors from fogging up.
The dirt... well, I feel like it did come off.
But the effect of the mirror not fogging up... did that happen? I feel like it barely did.
The Slendertone might have been an extension of that.
At the time, Taizo Sugimura was appearing in it, and I feel like I was partly swept up by his momentum.
Come to think of it, it is not just television.
There are also things I bought after hearing radio commercials while driving.
The “Roast Earthenware Pot”.
It was supposed to have high thermal conductivity, cook rice deliciously, and be a highly versatile product as an earthenware pot.
I cooked rice in it once, but in reality, there was almost no period where I used it for its intended purpose.
However, this roast earthenware pot is still in active use in our home.
It is doing a great job as a dedicated roasted sweet potato machine.
Shopping channels, especially TV shopping, make you buy things on impulse. And it is not rare for things to stop being used quickly.
Even so, when they are occasionally unearthed from the closet, I remember the TV programs I was watching at the time and even what I was thinking about.
Sometimes shopping channels deliver not just the product, but also the version of myself from that era, so I guess that is fine.
That is how I make excuses to myself.
