A Great Detective Looks at the 'Stain on the Glass'

~The Magic of Pulling the 'Ground' Closer~

Ahhh!

It's getting cold, isn't it? On nights like this, the steam from a hot drink seems to look like the abyss of life... (gulp).

Yes, this is the drunken ramblings of a fool!

Last time, I talked about something a bit philosophical: don't just get distracted by the flashy problems (the figure) right in front of you, but look at the background (the ground) that is creating them!

'I get what you're saying, you drunkard.'

'The "ground" is the background, right? You can't see it. How are you supposed to look at it?'

I can almost hear voices like that coming from the bottom of my empty glass (auditory hallucination?).

That's right. Since the "ground" is the background, you can't see it if you just look at it normally.

However, the "ground" always leaves "traces" in the visible world.

Today, I'm going to talk about becoming a "detective of daily life" who finds those traces.

🥃 "Objects" speak as clearly as words

For example, suppose you visit a client's home and see a "tea-stained teacup" sitting on the table.

[Figure (Objective Fact)]

• There is a tea-stained teacup.

If you look at this only as a "figure," it ends with "it's dirty (problem)" -> "wash it (solution)," right? This is symptomatic treatment.

But here, a professional (= a great detective) who focuses on the "ground" thinks like this.

Why is this particular teacup so worn out?

When I asked, I was told,

This is the teacup my late grandfather used for his last cup of tea.

And just like that, a narrative emerges.

See! Did you catch it?

It is the moment when a massive background—the longing for a late husband and the values that cherish that memory (the ground)—is dragged out from a small trace like a tea stain (the figure).

🔍 Deciphering the 'Traces of Daily Life'

As I touch upon in the book I am currently writing (tentative title: The Power to See the Invisible), these 'traces of daily life' are the very ladders used to descend into the invisible 'ground'.

• Notes written on a wall calendar (Who are they waiting to connect with?)

• The worn-out spots on the tatami mats (Where do they sit every day, and what are they looking at?)

• Repeated stories from the past (Are they trying to support their current situation with past glory?)

At first glance, these may look like scattered 'points' (objective facts), but they are actually moments when the 'context of life' (the ground) lurking behind them has popped up to the surface.

🤝 When you understand the 'ground,' care changes

Let's go back to the story of the teacup.

Once you see the 'ground' (the longing for the husband), a caregiver would no longer just soak that teacup in bleach as if it were merely 'dirty dishes,' would they?

Instead, they would say, 'This is a precious teacup, isn't it? I'll wash it gently for you.'

It should change to a voice that says that.

This is what it means to pay respect to the 'ground'.

And it is in this very moment that the user feels a deep sense of relief (ease), thinking, 'Ah, this person understands me.'
