Book Report Strategy Guide [4] Rules for Paragraph Structure

🌸 Useful for book reports!
☞ Let's master the rules of paragraph structure★

How to choose a book, how to read a book, and topics to write about, this is the continuation of our book report advice series. This time, I'll share things to keep in mind when you actually sit down to write.

① Use one paragraph for each topic

Paragraph structure can be confusing, right? Basically, splitting paragraphs by what you want to write makes it look neat. When you make an effort to make it easy to read, it's rewarding because your message gets across.

② You don't need to worry about 'Kishōtenketsu' (Introduction, Development, Turn, Conclusion)

Many of you have probably heard of 'Kishōtenketsu' or 'Jo-ha-kyū' as advice for writing good essays.

That may be true, but if you worry about it too much, you might start stressing over things like, 'What should I write for the turn?' or 'Does this part not feel like a break?'... It's okay to think of 'Kishōtenketsu' or 'Jo-ha-kyū' as just terms used to explain well-crafted essays, and treat them as separate from your own writing.

You don't need to overthink it♡ If you include the necessary information, it's a perfectly good essay

③ Finish writing to the end in your draft

When you try to write perfectly, you end up writing and erasing, going back to reread, and worrying... That's how you get stuck. This is something that happens often even to people who write for a living (by the way, that includes me, Machika-sensei).

What's important for finishing an essay is momentum! I really want you all to try to write it all the way to the end in one go. You can read through it and make revisions (polishing) after that♡

④ Major polishing and minor polishing

Revising a text is called 'polishing' (suikō). I love your energetic, unpolished essays too, but since I'm talking about tips for finishing a book report today, I'll touch on polishing as well.

When polishing, it's easier to think of it in two parts: major construction like rearranging paragraphs (major polishing), and refining expressions or adding text within the same paragraph (minor polishing). Give it a try!

⑤ Guidelines for the number of paragraphs

For book report assignments, there's a set character count for each grade level. As you go up in grade, the character count increases. Many kids feel pressured, thinking, 'I can't write that much!' In those cases, it's good to think about it in terms of the number of paragraphs.

Lower elementary grades: 3-4 paragraphs
Upper elementary grades: 4-5 paragraphs
Junior high school students: 6-8 paragraphs

Surprisingly, you'll end up close to the required character count, so give it a try☆

Today's note is a repost from #MachikaSenseiEssayAdvice, which I post on X. You can read the entire Book Report Strategy Guide series from the link below, so be sure to check it out!

This is the final installment of the 'Book Report' advice series, which I have been updating in four parts. Some kids might think, 'Wait, that's it?' (On the other hand, my colleagues tell me I'm revealing too many of my secrets.)

In that sense, it just goes to show that there aren't that many rules for writing a good composition. I published this hoping you would grasp the basic points.

But I'm Teacher Machika, and I can't help but want to help if there are kids who are struggling.Do you want to read about the points for making a final copy too...? I wonder if anyone wants to know?

/ Everyone, let's do our best! \
