Is 'Sightseeing' Outdated? How the Value of Travel is Quietly Changing in 2026
I'm Maka-hane, a note beginner and former marketer.
Happy New Year. I apologize for not being able to reply to comments and such. I will do my best again this year.
Now, this time I'd like to talk about tourism.
We have entered an era where how you spend your time is more important than where you go.
Lately, as I look at travel news and social media posts, I've been feeling this change more and more. In 2026, our travel is definitely being updated.
▪️Going to tourist spots is no longer the 'correct' answer
Until recently, travel meant:
Visiting famous spots
Taking photos
Buying souvenirs
This flow was the 'royal road'.
But what about now?
'I was exhausted because there were too many people.'
'It's famous, but honestly, it didn't leave much of an impression.'
Such voices are not rare.
Behind this is the saturation of tourism.
With the increase in inbound tourism, information spreading via social media, and overtourism, being famous no longer necessarily equates to value.
▪️The keyword for 2026 is 'Personal Travel'
What is attracting attention now is 'travel optimized for your own preferences and purposes'.
For example—
Staying in one town instead of visiting tourist spots
Hotel hopping, where you enjoy the hotel itself
Travel centered around sports events or music festivals
Workations that combine work and vacation
What they all have in common is that they are based on your own satisfaction, not someone else's standard of success.
Travel is clearly shifting from 'consumption' to 'experience'.
▪️Travel costs and rules are also starting to change
Another thing we cannot overlook is changes in the system.
With the increase in accommodation taxes and the review of tourism rules in each region, the era of 'just showing up is fine' is coming to an end.
This may seem negative at first glance, but on the flip side,
reducing congestion
ensuring money stays in the local community
ensuring only those who truly want to come visit
it can be said that we are transitioning to such a system.
Travel is changing from 'cheap and massive' to 'paying for valuable time'.
▪️Staying becomes the main event rather than moving
What is particularly impressive about travel in 2026 is that the movement itself is no longer the main event. Previously, 'how many places you could visit' or 'how much you could pack in' were the standards for measuring the fulfillment of a trip.
But now,
drinking coffee slowly in the morning
Going to a local supermarket
Enjoying time spent doing nothing
These moments of empty space define the satisfaction of a trip.
Perhaps it is precisely because of our busy daily lives that we seek a 'reason to pause' when we travel.
*Travel becomes a mirror that reflects your own values.
Choosing what kind of trip to take is a bit like choosing how you want to live your life.
Do you prioritize efficiency, or do you prioritize space? Do you seek stimulation, or do you choose peace of mind?
In 2026, travel has become more about talking about 'how you felt' rather than 'where you went'.
Perhaps travel from now on will be a time to confirm your own values.
