Weekly Short-Short Note | Daiuso-ji Temple
Exhausted from work, Shinichi decided to become a monk.
When he went to consult with a local temple about it, he was told that being hired as a full-time employee without prior experience as a monk was quite difficult.
So, hoping to find some kind of lead, Shinichi searched for 'temple employment.' He then discovered that there was a temple where one could receive vocational training through a short-term intensive camp.
It was located in Saitama Prefecture, in the Minami Ward of Sapporo City.
There, Shinichi underwent various training, such as how to manufacture incense, finishing coats for wooden fish drums, and practical training in loading cardboard boxes containing Buddha statues—before they were consecrated—into a wagon for delivery.
However, Shinichi was unable to receive a job offer from a temple.
In the end, he decided to stay on and help out at this training temple. It wasn't a full-time position, but since he was used to the work and there was a dormitory, he thought it wasn't so bad.
One day, while Shinichi was out delivering Buddha statues as usual, a peer from his training days came out of a temple.
"How's work?"
"It's just things like chanting sutras, which is completely different from what we did in training, and it's tough."
Shinichi searched for the word 'sutra,' which he had never heard before.
