Why it is better to think about the 'state you want to be in' rather than 'what you want to do'
When making major decisions like changing jobs, people always think about what they want to do.
Surprisingly, for many people, thinking about the 'state they want to be in' is a shorter path.
I was able to realize this thanks to Yuiga Kitano's book, 'Read This If You've Ever Thought, Should I Stay at This Company? The Thinking Method for Changing Jobs'.
I will introduce what I realized and what I put into practice from this reference book.
This article is intended for the following people:
✅ Those who cannot find what they want to do
✅ Those who are lost regarding their career or life path
For 99% of people, having something they truly want to do is not necessary
There are two types of people.
・People who place importance on 'to do' (tasks)……They think about things in terms of what to do. They have clear dreams or goals.
・People who place importance on 'being' (state)……They prioritize what kind of person they want to be or what kind of state they want to be in.
The illusion of 'something you truly want to do'
99% of people place importance on 'being' (state).
On the other hand, the success philosophies overflowing in the world are written by people who place importance on 'to do' (tasks).
Therefore, 99% of people often wander in search of the illusion of 'something they truly want to do'.
There is no need to feel insecure about not being able to find 'what you want to do'.
As shown below, it is just a difference in values.
Even for 'being' type people, you will definitely find 'something you want to do to some extent'.
Once 'being' type people reach a certain age, they will never find 'something they can truly enjoy' no matter how far they go. However, that is perfectly fine. It is because it is a difference in values regarding what to prioritize, not a compromise.
What 'being' (state) type people should do
I also stopped thinking about 'what I want to do' and felt relieved.
In other words, I was a 'being' type person.
As a result of pursuing the 'state I want to be in', I am working in an industry I am not particularly interested in.
Since I am able to work in a state where I feel comfortable, my satisfaction level is high.
1. Aim for a state with a 'balance between tension and relaxation'
What is a comfortable state for 'being' type people is a
state with a 'balance between tension and relaxation'.
In terms of work, this means preparing earnestly for an important presentation and relaxing once it is over.
Just like in games, work is boring if it is too easy, and if the enemies are too strong, you will lose heart.
To understand the balance of your current situation, it is a good idea to write down and organize situations at work where you felt strong tension, as follows.
Write down on paper the situations where you felt strong tension at work and count them. Classify them into good tension and bad tension. Then, if you cannot list three instances of good tension in the last six months, it is time to change the game. Conversely, if you are feeling 10 or 20 instances of bad tension, it would be better to change your environment.
In Yutaro's case
When I wrote down the situations where I felt tension while job hunting...
Bad tension
- The client had no will (what they wanted to do), making it difficult to proceed with the work.
Good tension
- None in particular
I realized that I had no good tension at all and was just coasting through my work.
I thought I needed new stimulation in a different environment and immediately decided to change jobs.
2. Bring what you are good at closer to what you like
Another important thing is to find something you like to some extent.
Even if you cannot find what you truly want to do like the 'to-do' (action) type, you should be able to find something 'to some extent'.
Try to bring what you are good at closer to what you like be conscious of this.
Here are two specific ways to find it.
How 'being' type people can find what they like
1: Look for things that others say you are good at but 'you don't really feel it yourself'
2: Look for things in your daily work that 'you feel absolutely no stress doing'
For 1, it is easiest to ask family and friends.
It is also good to ask in communities different from your workplace.
If you change jobs and work in a different environment, it becomes much easier to see.
Changing jobs is also recommended for the purpose of finding what you like.
I recommend 2!
If you look at your daily detailed tasks, there are tasks you do without any trouble at all.
It is easier to find if you compare states where your emotions changed during work, like the one below!
In Yutaro's case
1: Look for things that others say you are good at but 'you don't really feel it yourself'
* I didn't think of this when I was changing jobs.
-> I realized many things after being told at my new job.
2: Look for things in your daily work that 'you feel absolutely no stress doing'
- When I am visualizing my own thoughts/what I want to do
-> I am absorbed in my work when my head is being organized while creating materials
- When I am working out strategies to advance my own thoughts/what I want to do
I liked planning or initiating something myself.
In the end, I changed jobs from consulting to a planning position!
Summary
