Time for Just the Two of Us: 'Becoming Someone Who Nurtures' ~Story (Part 4: Conclusion)~

~What It Means to Become Someone Who Nurtures~
This is the conclusion to the following story. (It will also be uploaded on TALES)

~Memories of a Family Connected by Light~
—Feelings Connected by Light—

🌸 Prologue

The spring twilight was faintly dyeing the windows.

Miu found a black camera inside an old cardboard box that had come out of the closet.

"Oh, it's Mom's camera."

When she opened the back cover, there was film left inside that hadn't been rewound, still mid-roll.
Only time had been left behind there.
The next day, the moment she saw the final photo that had been developed, Miu's breath hitched.
Her mother smiling under cherry blossoms in full bloom.
Her eyes were not looking at the camera, but at her younger self.

(She was looking at me...)

In the corner of the photo, there were small letters that could be read as "Parc des..."
An unfamiliar language.
It was French.
Her father spoke quietly.
That even when her mother went abroad for work, she never left Miu with anyone else, but always took her along.
And about the existence of a "woman with a gentle voice" she met under the cherry tree-lined path in a foreign land.
"I can't remember her name, but... Mom used to talk about her a lot. 'That person's voice is as gentle as spring,' she'd say."
Miu stared at the photo.
The cobblestones in the background were a shape she had never seen in Japan.
When she looked it up, they were paving stones often used in old French towns.
At that moment, a small scrap of paper fell from the back of the camera case.
When she picked it up, a place name was written on it in her mother's handwriting.
"Lyon"
The depths of her chest suddenly felt warm.

(Mom, were you really here? Did you walk through this town holding me?)

I want to see the scenery that was before my mother's eyes with my own.
I want to grasp the light my mother saw last with these hands.
Miu hugged the photo to her chest.

(I'm going to go find the light Mom saw.)

A spring breeze blew through, and petals danced.
The warmth was just like her mother's palm.
As if pushed by that warmth, Miu quietly closed her eyes.
And then, she slowly inhaled.

The journey begins.
To that "Spring in Lyon" that Mom loved.

🌼 Chapter 1: Spring in Lyon

The spring light slowly tilted through the airplane window.
Miu gently placed her hand on her chest pocket.
Inside were her mother's last photo and the small scrap of paper with "Lyon" written on it.

The letters "Parc des..." in the corner of the photo.
The "Lyon" scrap left in the camera case.
And the "town Mom loved" that her father spoke of.
Those three things led Miu to Lyon.

(I really... came here.)

The plane landed, and a French announcement played.
The sound was somehow soft, remaining in her ears like a spring breeze.
The moment she stepped out of the airport doors, the dry air brushed her cheeks.
It was a little colder than spring in Japan, but the light was somehow warm.
After dropping her bags at the hotel, Miu went out into the city.
But... that day, the next day, and the day after that, although she found several places that resembled the stone walls and cherry tree-lined paths in her mother's photo, none of them were definitive.
I want to see the place that was before my mother's eyes with my own.
That desire gradually turned into impatience during the days she couldn't find it.

(No. It's not here...)

She spread out a map, walked around, and aimed her camera looking for the same light as in the photo.
But she couldn't reach the "certainty" deep in her chest.
Impatience piled up little by little.

(Mom, where were you? Were you really in this city?)

The afternoon of the third day.
Dragging her tired feet, Miu suddenly turned onto a narrow path leading toward the river.
The wind blew, and there was the scent of flowers.

(Oh... this scent.)

The depths of her chest trembled faintly.
The moment she cleared the path, her field of vision opened up softly.
Light shimmered on the river surface, and pale cherry blossoms were lined up.
They were a little paler than Japanese cherry blossoms, and the shape of the petals was also somewhat different.
But that scene certainly overlapped with "Mom's photo."
Miu gasped.

(Is this... it?)

The depths of her chest grew hot.
She aimed her camera and gently pressed the shutter.

Click.
The sound of happiness (the shutter sound) melted into the spring air.
But it felt like a slightly different landscape than that photo.

That was when it happened.
There was a woman stopping in her tracks a little distance away.
A woman with a calm atmosphere wearing a white scarf.
The cherry blossom embroidery on the strap swaying in the wind caught the sunset and suddenly shone.
In that instant, the woman's expression changed.
She was staring intently at the camera in Miu's hand.
Miu didn't notice that change.
Again, the wind blew, the cherry blossom embroidery on the strap swayed, and the cherry blossom sticker on the lens cap reflected the light.
The woman's expression wavered with surprise and nostalgia.
She slowly approached.
"Excuse me... that..."
Miu turned around.
The woman, staring at the camera, said in a voice filled with confusion rather than certainty.
"That... is that the camera your mother used?"
Miu's heart leaped.
"Eh, how do you know...?"
The woman gently dropped her gaze to the embroidery on the strap.
"I remember... that embroidery. I'm sure of it. She used to sew it little by little at night. 'This way I won't drop it,' she'd say with a laugh."

Furthermore, looking at the sticker on the lens cap, she narrowed her eyes as if feeling nostalgic.
"And that cherry blossom sticker... it's the same one she used to have."
Miu's throat tightened.
"Do you know that woman... do you know my mom?"
The woman took a small breath and introduced herself.
"I'm Hélène. I was... a friend of your mother's for a short time. Your name is Miu, right?"
Spring light gently poured down between the two of them.
Miu felt the depths of her chest grow hot.

(Mom, I am touching your footsteps right now.)

Hélène smiled gently.
"If you'd like, could we talk for a bit? There is something I want to tell you."
Miu nodded without hesitation.
The twilight light stretched their shadows long.
Those shadows looked as if her mother was gently snuggling up to them.

🌸 Chapter 2: Hélène's Memories

Hélène's home was a room in an old stone apartment building facing a quiet street, a little away from the cherry tree-lined path along the river.
Every time she climbed the stairs, something was pulsing quietly in the depths of Miu's chest.

(Has Mom... ever climbed these stairs?)

Such an imagination made her feet feel light.
Hélène unlocked the door and smiled softly, saying, "Please, come in."
When she entered the room, there was the scent of warm tea and the somewhat nostalgic smell of wood.
Old photos were displayed on the walls.
Family, friends, landscapes from her travels.

Finding a certain resemblance among them, Miu gasped.
"...Mom?"
There, a woman with the same smile as the mother in her memories, her mother in her younger days, was laughing.
Hélène placed two cups of tea and sat quietly next to Miu.

"Your mother... was a very kind person. But she was also a strong person."
Miu clenched her hands on her lap.
"How did Mom spend her time here?"
Hélène narrowed her eyes just a little and began to speak as if tracing her memories.
"When you were still small, she would often walk through this city holding you. She loved the season when the cherry blossoms bloomed. 'It's different from spring in Japan, but I love this light too,' she'd say."
Miu's chest grew hot.

(Mom...)

Hélène continued.
"You were a child who slept a lot. In her arms. Her face at those times looked truly happy."
Miu's vision blurred slightly.
"I've never heard that story before."
Hélène smiled.
"Your mother always held you while she took photos. 'There are views I want to see together with this child,' she'd say."
Miu felt the depths of her chest tighten.

Hélène suddenly clouded her expression.
"But you know... she seemed to be... a little troubled. Sometimes, she would say, 'The light is getting blurry.' But she would laugh and say, 'I'm just tired.' It looked like she was hiding something behind that smile..."
Hélène stopped speaking for a moment there.
"Your mother was, in truth—"
She started to say that, then gently shook her head.

"I'm sorry. This isn't something I should be the one to say."
Miu looked up.
"Troubled?"
Hélène slowly brought her tea to her lips as if choosing her words.
"I don't know the details either. Just... it's certain that she looked like she was being driven by anxiety while holding you..."
Miu's heart beat strongly once.

(Mom... what were you looking at? What were you carrying?)

Hélène continued.
"Those eyes, now that I think about it, were 'the eyes of someone looking at the future.'"
Miu gasped.
"The future...?"
Hélène nodded quietly.
"Yes. It was as if she was praying, 'May this child be able to walk in the light even in a future where I am not there.'"
Miu's chest grew hot.

(Mom, such feelings...)

Hélène gently touched Miu's hand.
"Your mother said, 'Light can be left behind.' 'Even if I am gone, the light will remain within this child.'"
Tears fell quietly from Miu's eyes.

(The light Mom left behind... is that me?)

Hélène smiled a little sadly.
"On the day we last met, she started to say something and then stopped. Her expression at that time was as if she were swallowing her words... I still can't forget it."
While listening to Hélène's words, Miu quietly imagined how much she knew about her mother.

Hélène didn't know the "reason" for her mother's anxiety.
However, as a friend, she certainly felt the wavering deep in her eyes. Even if she didn't understand the medical side, she clearly understood that the wavering contained both "fear" and "resolve." She understood that her mother was afraid of something and was trying to protect something.

Hélène gently dropped her gaze.
"But... her eyes at that time were 'the eyes of someone who had made a resolve.'"
Miu's breathing stopped.
"A resolve?"
Hélène shook her head.
"I don't know. But... I felt like I heard her say, 'I might have to entrust this child to you.'"
A quiet time flowed in the room.
Hélène said while looking at the cherry blossoms outside the window.
"The reason you came here is surely because the light she left behind called you."
Miu wiped her tears and nodded slightly.

(Mom, I came to find the light you left behind.)

A spring breeze blew in from the window, and a cherry blossom petal danced into the room.
That petal fell gently onto Miu's lap, just like her mother's palm.

🌸 Chapter 3: Returning Home and the Photo in the Envelope

The twilight light slowly seeped into the window of the plane leaving Lyon.
Miu couldn't do anything about the restlessness remaining deep in her chest.

(Mom, what were you looking at beyond that light?)

Hélène's words didn't fade, like residual heat remaining deep in her heart.
"Eyes looking at the future"
"Light can be left behind"
"Eyes of someone who had made a resolve"
All of them were still aching quietly without taking shape within Miu.

The air in her house upon returning to Japan felt somewhat different.
When she opened the front door, her father's footsteps approached from the back of the living room.
"Miu, you're home."
That voice carried a "sound of confirming something" rather than nostalgia.
It was as if he were looking for "something" deep in Miu's expression.
Miu felt the restlessness in her chest surge like a wave again as she took off her shoes.
Her father remained silent for a while, then inhaled as if to make a decision.
"There is something I want to talk about. There is something I haven't been able to give you for a long time."
At those words, Miu's heart leaped quietly.

Her father opened an old drawer and took out two thin envelopes.
The yellowed color of the paper.
The bent corners.
The weight of time that had gone untouched.
"These are... what Mom left for you. One is addressed 'To little Miu.' The second one just says 'To Miu.' I intended to give them to you when you became an adult..."
Miu gasped.

Her father spun his words slowly while staring at the envelopes.
"I thought about giving them to you before you went on your trip, too. But I couldn't. I thought you weren't in a state to accept that light yet."
Miu looked up.
Her father continued, looking down a little.
"Mom said it. 'Please give them to her when this child finds the light with her own eyes.' Mom believed that the day would come when you would choose your future with your own feet."
Miu's chest trembled.

(Mom, did you believe all along that I would go on a journey?)

Her father continued.
"Seeing your face when you returned, I thought I could finally give them to you."
Those words fell quietly into the depths of Miu's chest.

(Mom, you believed in me and left these envelopes for me at the end of my journey, didn't you?)

Miu opened the envelope entrusted "To little Miu" with trembling fingers.
Inside was a photo.
A cherry tree-lined path along the river at twilight.
In the center, her younger self.
And the light shining in as if to wrap around that shadow.
That light was snuggling up as if to protect her younger self.
Miu's chest beat strongly.

(Is this... the light Mom saw last?)

On the edge of the photo, it was written in small letters in her mother's handwriting.
"May this light protect you"
Miu traced those words with her fingertips.
The depths of her chest grew hot, quietly but surely.

(Mom... I will properly receive the light you left behind.)

The sunset light shining in from the window overlapped with the light in the photo.
It was as if her mother were smiling gently.

🌸 Chapter 4: The Shadow of Mom's Truth

Left on the back of the photo,
"I'm sorry"
Those words were wavering quietly in the depths of Miu's chest.
There was no need to apologize anywhere.
But those words felt like the shape of the pain her mother touched last.

(Mom, why... why did you apologize?)

Deep in her chest, an indescribable restlessness was spreading slowly.
Before she knew it, Miu was standing in front of her mother's room.
When she opened the door, slightly cold air touched her cheeks.
Beyond that coldness, her mother's scent still remained faintly.
Notebooks her mother used were piled up on the desk.
Miu gently opened one.
Short words were lined up there in her mother's handwriting.

"Light"
"Future"
"This child will be okay"

"I'm sorry"
The moment she saw the last words, Miu's fingers trembled.

(What were you carrying? Why did you write such words?)

When she turned the page, a piece of paper was tucked inside.
"Someday, when this child finds the light. At that time, I might not be by her side anymore."
Those words touched the depths of her chest like a cold blade.
Miu's breathing stopped.

("Not be by her side"? What does that mean...?)

A cold shadow fell into the depths of her chest.
At that moment, there was a sign of someone gasping quietly behind her.
When she turned around, her father was standing there.
It was an expression as if he had been hesitating about when to call out to her.
"...Miu."
That voice,
had a resonance that called up some distant memory.
Miu inhaled slightly while holding the notebook to her chest.
"Hey... why did Mom write 'I'm sorry'?"
Her father was silent for a while.
That silence was heavier than words, falling into Miu's chest.
It was a silence as if swallowing pain while searching for words that should be conveyed.

"Miu. Mom didn't hide anything from you. It's just... I think she couldn't say it."
"Couldn't say it?"
Her father nodded slowly.
"Mom chose something to protect you."
Miu's chest tightened strongly.
"What?"
Her father looked down.
"That, I don't know everything either. But Mom was looking only at your future until the very end."
Those words overlapped with Hélène's words.
"Eyes looking at the future"
Deep in Miu's chest, something began to connect quietly.

Her father continued.
"Mom... said this to me at the end."
Miu gasped.
"'This child can walk in the light. So she'll be okay.'"
Those words overlapped with the light in the photo.

(What did you entrust to me? What were you afraid of? Why 'I'm sorry' like that...)

Deep in Miu's chest, a deep shadow was spreading slowly, changing its shape.
At the bottom of that shadow—
the truth of her mother was about to open its eyes slowly.

🌸 Chapter 5: Touching the Bottom of the Shadow

The silence of the night was absorbing every sound in the house.
Miu was sitting on the sofa without turning on the lights, holding her mother's notebook to her chest.
Only the light of the streetlamp shining in from outside the window was faintly illuminating the outline of the room.
Deep in her chest, the words "I'm sorry" were still wavering.

(Mom, what were you afraid of? Why did you leave such words behind?)

The texture of the notebook paper remained faintly on her fingertips.
"I might not be by your side"
Those words were casting a cold shadow on Miu's heart.
That shadow was not just anxiety, but something deeper.
She felt that her mother's fear was certainly lurking behind those words.
Her father approached quietly.
Before calling out, he sat down gently next to Miu.
"You saw Mom's notebook, didn't you?"
Miu nodded.

If she let out words, something deep in her chest felt like it would crumble.
Her father was silent for a while.
That silence was neither denying nor affirming Miu's question, just heavy, and there.
It was a silence as if swallowing pain while searching for words that should be conveyed.
It was as if he were tracing past memories one by one.
It was as if he were quietly measuring in his heart how far he should talk.
"Mom was thinking about something ever since you were born."
That voice sounded like it was coming from somewhere far away.
"What... was she thinking about?"
Miu's voice was smaller than she expected.

Her father inhaled slowly.
"About the future. Yours, and her own..."
Miu's chest beat strongly.
"I think Mom thought she might not be by your side for long."
"Why...?"
Her father looked down.
"The reason, I don't know everything either. But Mom... I think she knew something. Something related to her own future."
Miu's throat tightened.

(Mom, what... did you know?)

Her father continued.
"Toward the end, there were days when Mom looked like she was frightened. It was eyes like she was afraid of losing sight of something."
Miu's heart leaped.
"But at the same time, she had the eyes of someone who had decided on something. Like she had made a resolve... those kinds of eyes."

Hélène's words came back.
"Eyes of someone who had made a resolve"
Deep in Miu's chest, something was connecting quietly.
Her father touched the photo gently with his fingertips.
"Mom said this to me at the end."
Miu held her breath.
"'This child can walk in the light. So, she'll be okay.'"
Those words overlapped with the light in the photo and sank deeply into Miu's chest.

(What did you entrust to me? What were you afraid of? Why 'I'm sorry' like that...)

Deep in her chest, the shadow began to take shape slowly.
That shadow was not just sadness, but something deeper, quieter, and definitive.
Miu stared at the words on the back of the photo once more.
"I'm sorry. But you can live in the light."
She felt like she could certainly hear her mother's voice behind those words.

(What were you trying to protect me from?)

Deep in her chest, something moved clearly.
At the bottom of the shadow—
the truth of her mother was beginning to quietly reveal its outline.

🌸 Chapter 6: The Truth of Mom

Thin light that hadn't yet broken into dawn was shining in quietly from the gap in the curtains.
Miu had hardly slept.
Deep in her chest, the shadow was beginning to take shape slowly.
That shadow seemed to have the shape of the words her mother left behind, and at its center, her mother's voice was certainly there.

"I'm sorry. But you can live in the light."
That "I'm sorry" contained feelings that couldn't be explained by a single reason.
The fear that she might lose her sight.
The anxiety about a future where she couldn't be by her side.
The wish to still love Miu and believe in the future.
All of that overlapped with those letters.
She felt she had to accept the meaning of those words without running away anymore.

Her father was quietly brewing coffee in the morning light.
His back looked a little smaller than usual.
He looked like someone who had been carrying a long time.
"Were you awake?"
Miu nodded.
Her father placed the cup down and folded his fingertips as if hesitating for a while.
"From the day you left for Lyon until today, I've been thinking about how far I should talk. I think the time has come to properly talk about Mom. In truth... I thought about giving them to you sooner. But every time you cried, I got scared too. Whether the day would come when you could accept Mom's words... I didn't know. That's why I was hesitating all along. I myself was scared to look at the envelopes. If I opened them, it felt like admitting that Mom was really gone..."
That voice was the voice of someone who had made a resolve.
Miu's chest beat strongly.

Her father began to speak slowly.
"Mom had 'a certain anxiety' in her body even before you were born. It was the kind of anxiety she had been carrying without telling anyone."
Her father took a breath as if to swallow his words once.
"Toward the end... there were days when she said, 'The light is blurring.' I still can't forget Mom's face at those times. When she took photos, it took time for her to focus."
Miu gasped.
"Anxiety?"
Her father nodded.
"In Mom's family, there were people who lost their sight at a young age. The cause is unknown. It's not clear if it's genetic. But she had always thought she might become like that too. In other words, Mom was carrying 'the fear that she might not be able to see the future.' That was about her eyesight, and also about life itself."
Miu's chest tightened.

Her father continued.
"We consulted doctors. We had tests. But they couldn't say anything 'certain.' Just, Mom seemed to feel her vision changing little by little."
Miu's throat trembled.
"That's why, 'I might not be by your side'?"
Her father nodded quietly.
"Mom said when you were still small that she didn't know how long her eyes would be able to see 'the light.' I think there was a fear behind those words that she couldn't tell anyone. But, Miu... this wasn't a 'precursor to death.' What Mom was afraid of wasn't the illness itself, but the 'wavering of vision' as a symbol that she might not be able to see the future. That's exactly why Mom was strongly fixated on 'leaving the light behind.'"
Miu's vision blurred.

Her father gently traced the photo with his finger.
"That's why Mom went to see 'the light' with you. The spring in Lyon, the cherry blossoms, the light on the river... all of it, 'I want to see this with this child while I can.' That was the only 'certain thing' Mom could leave for the future. She wanted to leave not just the scenery reflected in her eyes, but the feelings she put into that scene."
Miu's chest grew hot.

(You wanted to leave the light behind, didn't you?)

Her father's voice trembled slightly.
"Mom wished that even if she couldn't see, you would be able to walk in the light."
Miu's tears ran quietly down her cheeks.
"Light can be left behind"
"This child can walk in the light"
"I'm sorry"
Everything was connecting in a single line.
Her father looked down a little.
"Just, I don't think Mom passing away had anything to do with her eyesight. Her physical condition suddenly worsened, and after that... honestly, the cause wasn't clear, and I couldn't do anything about it either. Why did she change so suddenly and so quickly..."
Her father's voice saying those words was trembling faintly.
Miu gasped.
Her father continued.
"But, until the very end, Mom believed in your future. 'This child can walk in the light.' She told me that many times."
Miu gently traced the words on the back of the photo with her finger.
"I'm sorry. But you can live in the light."

(You entrusted the light to me, didn't you?)

Deep in her chest, the shadow was unraveling quietly.
From beyond that—
Mom's light was slowly revealing its figure.
It was "the shape of the future" that her mother continued to believe in until the end.
That light was breathing quietly within Miu herself.

🌸 Chapter 7: Toward the Light

The spring breeze was gently swaying the cherry blossoms in the garden.
Miu went outside quietly with her mother's notebook and photo in hand.
The sky was pale blue.
Clouds were flowing slowly.
That scene looked somewhat like the sky in Lyon.

(Mom, was the light you saw this gentle?)

Her mother's words echoed quietly in the depths of her chest.
"Light can be left behind"
She was finally beginning to understand the meaning of that.
When she sat on an old bench at the edge of the garden,
her father approached slowly.
"Miu."
That voice carried a somewhat relieved resonance.
Miu showed the photo gently to her father.
"Hey, Mom... wanted to leave this light to me, didn't she?"
Her father nodded slightly.
"That's right. Mom believed in your future. She believed that no matter what kind of future it was, you could walk in the light."
Miu felt the depths of her chest grow hot.
"I... want to properly find the light Mom left behind."
Her father narrowed his eyes a little.
"Miu. The light Mom left behind is inside you."
Those words fell into her chest quietly like spring light.

Suddenly, the words Hélène started to say and then stopped crossed her chest.
"At that time... 'Your mother was, in truth—'"
She couldn't hear the rest.
But she felt like she understood now.
Her mother believed in the future.
That even in a future where she was gone, this child could walk in the light.

Miu opened her mother's notebook.
"Light"
"Future"
"This child will be okay"

And—
"I'm sorry"
When she stared at those letters, something unraveled suddenly deep in her chest.
There were thinly rubbed letters on the edge of the page.
They were small words that only emerged at the angle of the light.

"When this child finds the light, I surely won't be by her side.
But—my light will remain within this child."

Miu's vision wavered.

(Mom, you wrote all your feelings toward me in the future, didn't you?)

While fearing a future where she would be gone, her mother strongly believed only in the future of Miu walking ahead.
"This child can walk in the light"
Those words were also a prayer her mother told herself.
Miu hugged the notebook to her chest.
She could see the light without hesitation anymore.

(Your light is properly inside me.)

The wind blew, and cherry blossom petals danced.
One petal fell gently onto Miu's hand.
That warmth was just like her mother's palm.
Miu stood up and looked at the sky.
Light was spilling through the gaps in the branches.
That light was the same color as the light her mother saw last.
It was gentle, warm, and a color that continued to the future.
That color was gently illuminating the path Miu herself was walking.

(I'm okay now.)

A certain warmth was spreading deep in her chest.
It was the light her mother left behind.
And, her own light.
Miu started walking toward that light.

🌸 Epilogue: Beyond the Light

The light of the spring afternoon was gently illuminating the photo frame by the window.

Miu gently picked up her mother's camera.
The cherry blossom embroidery on the strap swayed faintly in the light.
That swaying was the same as the spring breeze that blew in Lyon.

(Mom, the light you left behind is properly inside me.)

A quiet and certain warmth was spreading deep in her chest.
On the desk were her mother's notebook and the photo that had been in the envelope.

And, "another envelope" that her father had gently given her when she returned from her trip was placed there.
She hadn't opened it yet.
She knew that now was not the time to open it.
On the edge of the envelope, it was written in small letters in her mother's handwriting.
"Someday, when this child finds her own light"
Those letters felt like they were gently touching her from the future.

(I am going to find my own light from now on, aren't I?)

When she went out into the garden, cherry blossom petals were dancing on the wind.
Miu aimed the camera and pressed the shutter gently.

Click.

The sound of happiness rang out like a signal connecting the light her mother left behind and her own future.
In the photo she took, grains of light were floating softly around the petals.

(Mom, the light you saw and the light I will see from now on are surely connected somewhere.)

Something lit up quietly deep in her chest.
At that moment, her smartphone vibrated in her pocket.
An email from an overseas photo exhibition had arrived on the screen.

"I saw your photos. I would love to exhibit your work themed on 'Family Light.'"
Miu gasped.

(Family... light)

That was the word her mother believed in until the end.
When she looked up at the sky, spring light was spreading beyond the thin clouds.

(Let's go. To find my light.)

At that moment, one "place" floated deep in her chest.
It wasn't the cherry tree-lined path in Lyon, nor the path her mother walked.
The "that place" her mother saw last that she hadn't found yet.
The words Hélène started to say and then stopped.
The "blank time" her father hadn't touched.
The angle of that light that was captured on the edge of the photo.

(That place... is still somewhere.)

The wind blew, and a cherry blossom petal fell gently onto Miu's shoulder.
That warmth was just like her mother's palm.
Miu smiled and started walking toward the light.
On her back, the unopened envelope,
was quietly waiting for the future.

And from here on, Miu would continue to take photos of "family light" while traveling the world.
While searching for "that place" her mother saw last that she hadn't found yet.

Beyond the light.

To the Miu of the future.

⁂⁂Afterword⁂⁂
This story is fiction.

Now that I have finished writing this story, a light is quietly lit deep in my chest.
Just like the light Miu found at the end of her journey, it is the warmth that you, the reader, gently left behind through this story.

This long journey was a story of a girl and her father facing "loss," finding the "light" within it, inheriting it, and then starting to walk toward the future.
Sadness is not something that disappears.
However, I think that when people notice the small light deep within that sadness, they become able to move forward quietly.
The light Miu found was something her mother left behind, something her father continued to protect, and also the light she herself had nurtured.

The theme of "becoming someone who nurtures" is not directed only at parents.
Thinking of someone, snuggling up to someone's pain, and believing in someone's future.
I think that accumulation changes people into "someone who nurtures."

If you have ever shed tears thinking of someone.
If you have ever been saved by someone's words.
If your chest has ever been warmed by someone's clumsy kindness.
In that moment, you too have become "someone who leaves light behind."

Miu's journey ends here, but the light she found should surely be lit quietly within you as well.
Please, take that light with you to your own future.

Thank you very much for reading this far.
Beyond the path you walk, someone's light is surely waiting.
