The Meaning of Starting a Business "In Your Own Way"

One comment that left an impression on me was this:

It's true that
what catches the eye are often popular services, and it's easy to think, "Compared to that, I am..."

Comparing yourself is human nature.
In a sense, it's unavoidable.
But I believe there are many other more important things than that.

To begin with, why did you
become a freelancer?

The "Hierarchy of Needs" proposed by American psychologist Abraham Maslow.
According to it,

Originally, this is a psychological theory regarding human behavior in general, but it has influenced various fields and is often used in the field of marketing as well.

Let's think about this once more.
Why did you start your business?

"I want to be useful to others!" or
"I want to be told 'thank you'!" or
"Because I want to do what I want freely!" or

You must have various thoughts.

Surely, in terms of the Hierarchy of Needs, I think you
wanted to satisfy your "need for esteem" or
wanted to achieve "self-actualization".

If self-actualization is the goal,
is there any meaning in comparing yourself to others?

That's right.
Actually, there isn't much meaning in it.

What you really need to know is not the merits or demerits of other people, but
your own needs.

Something where you can express your true self and pour your passion into

If you use that as your pivot point, I believe it will lead directly to self-actualization. I also believe that
is what starting a business is all about.

The key to business is
whether you can keep it going

Most people probably
want to succeed, but what does success in entrepreneurship actually mean?

There are many ways to think about it, but
I think it is being able to continue.

When I ask what kind of situation allows you to continue,
many people answer, "Having money."

That is certainly not wrong.

Because money circulates, a business can continue.
That is an undeniable fact.

But there is something many people overlook.

That is, whether your "passion" can also continue.

Anyone can have temporary passion.
Anyone can have enough passion to say, "Let's try this!"

But when it comes to whether you can sustain that passion and motivation, the difficulty level jumps up instantly.
Just as there is not a single person around me who has been writing on note for over 10 years.

When you start a business, there are fun times and there are painful times.
Anxiety is also always lurking.

For me, the opposite of that anxiety is not "peace of mind."

It is excitement.

Not just me, but most successful entrepreneurs would say the same thing.

That is why I say loudly that
it is important to make "something where you can express your true self and pour your passion into" your pivot point.

Grasp your "true self" firmly and
focus on "something you can pour your passion into"

Incorporate things like "what you can do" and "what you are good at" into that.

By doing so, you can avoid the situation of "feeling down because you compare yourself to others...".
Just as no two people are the same,


there is no one else in this world who can do the exact same business as you.

Being yourself is the ultimate form of differentiation.
It doesn't matter what the people around you are doing.
Just use them as a reference at most.
