The Strait of Hormuz Tension and Our Call to Stay Awake

Over the past several days, tension around the Strait of Hormuz has intensified sharply. On April 22, Reuters reported that Iran seized two container ships trying to leave the Gulf, adding to fears about shipping disruption and wider instability. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, carrying roughly 20% of global oil and gas flows, so trouble there affects far more than one region.

When we hear news like this, it is natural to feel uneasy. Yet as believers, we are not called to watch the news merely to grow more anxious. We are called to discern the times with sober hearts. Moments like this remind us that the world system is fragile, that human stability can be shaken quickly, and that we should not build our peace on things that can collapse overnight.

The signs of the times are not given so that we may become obsessed with fear. They are allowed, in part, to awaken sleeping hearts. Wars, economic pressure, disruptions in trade, and growing international tension all remind us that this present world is not our final home. We are pilgrims here. We are watching, waiting, and preparing.

In such a season, the important question is not simply, “How much do I know?” but “Am I spiritually awake?” I may read many headlines and still neglect prayer. I may talk about prophecy and still fail to walk in repentance. The Lord is not only seeking people who can interpret the times, but people who will stay faithful, humble, and ready in the middle of them.

Prayer

Lord,
when the nations shake and the seas grow troubled,
keep my heart from becoming ruled by fear.
Help me not to be overwhelmed by headlines,
but awakened by Your truth.
Teach me to hear Your voice above the noise of this world.
Let me stand on Your Word when everything around me feels unstable.
Keep me watchful, prayerful, and spiritually alive.
Make me a believer who is ready, not merely informed.
