Desert Island Life Lucky Bag: Connecting the End and the Beginning
I was the only one left on the island.
Declining birth rates, environmental destruction, natural disasters, war, emigration...
People were lost, gradually, and all at once.
It is as if our country's former prosperity was a lie.
I had no choice but to spend the rest of my life all alone.
When I die, this island will be uninhabited for a while.
But I loved this island.
If someone were to visit after I am gone... could I leave something behind?
Food?
No, it would rot long before anyone arrived.
Writing?
No, there is no guarantee they would understand the language.
Weapons?
What good would it do to start another war?
This is the only way.
I cut a horn from an animal carcass, carved it, drilled holes into it, and placed it in a hemp bag.
This is my...
I woke up.
Where... am I?
Did I die...?
It seems my ship was wrecked, and I have washed ashore all alone.
What land is this?
It was overgrown with greenery, and there was no sign of anyone living here.
An uninhabited island...?
Just as I thought that, I noticed a hemp bag tied to a pine tree on the beach.
I knocked the bag down with a suitable stick and opened it to find a single horn.
It was hollow inside and had several holes drilled into it.
This is... a flute made from a horn.
When I put my mouth to the largest hole and covered the smaller holes in sequence,
it formed a melody.
It rang out gently, yet loudly, filling the sky.
I had never heard that melody before.
Yet, it felt nostalgic, and I felt as if I actually knew it.
Even though it was a language I did not know at all, the song came to my lips naturally.
Chasing rabbits on that mountain,
Fishing for crucian carp in that river,
My dreams still wander there,
My unforgettable hometown.
This is the place of the person who made this.
And, it is my...
A hermit crab poked its head out from the sand.
(End)
I am participating in Nika Tahara's "#WeeklyShortShort".
The theme was "#DesertIslandLifeLuckyBag".
I thought about singing "Furusato" and posting it, but I felt embarrassed, so I'll stop. I'll paste a YouTube link instead.
Isn't it more of a "misfortune" bag?
That kind of retort is also welcome.
"What are you talking about?"
I'm talking about a desert island.
