Memories of Rome: Rings
In Rome, there was a sport called 'chariot racing,' where a horse pulls a two-wheeled vehicle for one person.
If I mention it appeared in the epic film 'Ben-Hur,' some of you might recognize it.
I went to a Roman racetrack for the first time and watched this. I was encouraged to buy a betting ticket.
Beginner's luck—I hit the jackpot!
This is a ring I had made with that money. I consulted with a jeweler I knew, and it turned into a wonderful piece. It features a stone cameo with intricate carving, and the surrounding gold is also stylish.
I believe it cost about 50,000 yen 40 years ago. Even now, I only wear it on my pinky when I want to dress up!
The other design ring is a matching one I have with someone I love.
Moreover, I bought it on the Ponte Vecchio bridge in Florence.
At one of the many jewelry shops lined up there.
When I bought this, I thought I would live in Rome forever.
After that, due to sad circumstances, I returned to Japan with a broken heart.
This ring has become a precious memento. I sometimes wear it on the ring finger of my left hand.
'Wait, Ms. Okawa, aren't you single?' people ask in surprise. But this ring really does suit my left hand better than my right.
