He was a good man. But then that woman appeared and ruined everything.
That's right. That's why I buried him.

Ah, it's because the hydrangeas were red only in that spot.
You would notice, wouldn't you? If you were suspicious.
But you're wrong, Detective.
It's not red because I buried him there.
They were red last year and the year before that, too. There are photos in our album.
They've always been red.
Besides, if you bury something, they usually turn blue or purple, not red.
If you don't believe me, try digging under the blue ones across the way.
Oh, that's right. Do you know the term 'Hydrangea Boy'?

Well, that's true enough, I suppose.
The parts of the hydrangea we call petals are actually sepals. Did you know that?
They hide the truth and dress themselves up to look beautiful.
They create an atmosphere in the rain.
And for a man, they even have a sense of purity.
And yet, he held me after he had held that woman.
That's why I snapped him off.
I absolutely hate hydrangeas.
It's just because that person said they liked them.

I participated in Tarahakani-san's weekly short-short project with this week's theme, 'Hydrangea Boy'.
I tried to analyze the reason why Taraha-san mentioned in the aforementioned short-short article that 'hydrangeas start to look scary when you look at them closely.' I couldn't fit it into 410 characters, so I didn't make it into a story, but it might serve as material for an article. If anyone wants to write about it, please feel free to embellish the story.
Atmospheric and emotional perspective
1. I hate the damp, humid air of the rainy season to begin with, so the way they bloom in that environment without saying a word feels eerie. 2. The colors are pale and mostly blue. There are red ones, but they have a muted tone. The lack of vibrancy feels gloomy.
Appearance
3. They look like a collection of small flowers. Actually, Taraha-san is afraid of things that are densely packed together.
Memories 4. For some reason, I have unpleasant memories involving hydrangeas. 5. Hydrangeas appeared in a scary movie or TV drama I watched in my childhood.
These are just things that come to mind, but this is purely speculation, and I don't know the truth.
However, I am a citizen of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. In fact, the hydrangea is the official flower of Kobe City. It is a historic city flower that was decided by a citizen survey in 1970, the year of the previous Osaka Expo, which is currently being held again. So, hoping to help dispel Taraha-san's fear, I took some photos on this beautiful day (6/17). Please understand that these are not beautiful photos as I have no photography skills.
This mural is a tile design based on a painting by Chieko Takamura, the wife of Kotaro Takamura. It used to be a bit more vibrant, but the colors have faded significantly. I used to go to Kobe Bunka Hall to watch concerts, plays, and rakugo. Events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Bunka Hall will continue throughout this year. It is within a 10-minute walk from my current home, but there is a plan to relocate it to the Sannomiya area, the city center, after 2027. The building is quite old, so it can't be helped, but it's a shame.
The hydrangeas that grow wild in the Rokko mountain range have a long history, and even today, tens of thousands of them bloom in the Forest Botanical Garden. I can't exactly go to the Forest Botanical Garden for a casual stroll, so I'll just share the atmosphere here.
