Happy Writing Marathon #51 'If you were to represent yourself as a color, what color would it be? And why?'
If I were to represent myself right now, it would be a smoky silver.
A color like a relative of oxidized silver.
The reason for the smoky hue is that
a position like a stagehand
has felt right for me for a while now.
Meetings for my eldest son's wedding, the meeting of both families.
For the past six months or so, I have been in a position of supporting from behind rather than stepping forward.
The other day, we had the meeting of both families, and I met the parents of my eldest son's partner.
In our family, my eldest son has already registered his marriage, and
our stance was,
'Oh, thank goodness.
If he stayed with us forever,
our old age would be too difficult with such a difficult son.'
That was our stance.
He has become independent from his parents' home and even got married, so it's a happy ending for all. (Laughs)
On the other hand, the other family's parents have already experienced their sibling's wedding.
They also have a grandchild who is zero years old.
When the father gave a congratulatory speech at his son's wedding,
his mind went blank, and he was at a loss for words.
Given his line of work,
he should be most comfortable speaking in front of people,
but his tear ducts collapsed.
It seems those around him were flustered.
I can somehow picture that scene.
We had Chinese food at the meeting of both families, and
the father left his seat about twice during the meal.
He was likely crying his eyes out in the restroom.
When I asked,
'Is the father alright?'
the bride said,
'Even a demon sheds tears. Don't worry about him,'
quite casually.
Those words warmed my heart somehow.
Toward the end of the meal, the bride's father said,
'My daughter has a strong will.'
I immediately replied,
'I think having a strong will is a good thing.'
My husband
"..."
Or perhaps he just can't say. (laughs)
In truth, I wanted to say,
"Dad, it's okay. I'm probably even more strong-willed than you are,"
but I decided against it.
My son was raised by me, so
I think he can handle most levels of strong-willed personalities without any issues.
And if there were a young woman who would marry my unique son,
I had already decided in my heart that I would adapt to whoever she might be.
When my children were small, I heard a story like this.
The children we are blessed with will, upon becoming adults,
return to their original home and meet their true family.
Until then, we are just borrowing the children,
and are simply being allowed to raise them.
Perhaps that story existed for a day like today.
Parents are not the main characters.
But that doesn't mean we don't need to be there.
Not stepping too far forward, not pulling too far back,
existing there like a soft silver.
Right now, I am a smoky silver.
It is not flashy,
but I think it is a very good color.
