Pricing that leverages consumer psychology
First, let's explain fractional pricing.
Fractional pricing is a technique that makes consumers feel a 'sense of value' or 'ease of purchase' by adjusting prices in increments of 1 yen or several tens of yen.
For example, by setting a price at '490 yen' or '498 yen' instead of 500 yen, despite the slight difference, consumers psychologically find it easier to perceive as 'cheap'.
This effect has permeated society and is widely used in retail and online shops.
Don't you see this often at supermarkets and similar places??
And this concept can also be applied to selling paid content on note!!
Why fractional pricing is effective
Fractional pricing has the effect of making consumers think, 'This product is not expensive'.
For example, just by setting 1000 yen content to '980 yen', you can remove the psychological barrier of 'over 1000 yen' and increase the desire to purchase.
In other words, it lowers the psychological hurdle.
The effect is especially huge when the number of digits decreases!!
980 yen is easier to reach for at a glance than 1000 yen, isn't it??
Let's look at the numbers specifically.
Please take a look at the figure below.

What do you think??
Doesn't the one on the right feel overwhelmingly cheaper and easier to reach for?
The difference is only about 20 yen or 200 yen, but I think it feels much cheaper than that.
This is exactly the effect of fractional pricing!!
Success stories, learning from Nao Kurosaki
Many creators who are successful on note make good use of fractional pricing.
Let's look at a concrete example.
As you all know, it's Nao Kurosaki.
It seems Nao Kurosaki earned about 2.5 million yen on note in 2024... amazing...
And it's surprising considering they have only been on note for about a year and a half.
Here is how Nao Kurosaki sets their prices.

These are all articles currently on sale.
You can see that they are creating an even greater sense of value not just by having a sale, but by combining it with fractional pricing!
In particular, 980 yen looks like a much better deal compared to prices that were over 1000 yen.
Since products over 1000 yen carry a heavy psychological burden, they are reducing this burden by utilizing fractions.
Even with things like ramen, 950 yen is fine, but once it hits 1000 yen, it suddenly feels expensive, right??
I think this is a case of using that psychology well.
I really think successful people 'know what they are doing'.
Just looking at Nao Kurosaki, there are several other points where I think they are consciously setting prices??
I would like to introduce those another time, so stay tuned!!
Benefits of fractional pricing
Pricing with fractional displays affects the overall profitability and brand image of the business.
Specifically, there are the following benefits.
○ Maximizing Revenue
Even if the unit profit drops slightly, an increase in the purchase rate leads to an overall increase in sales.
○ Pricing Flexibility
By utilizing odd pricing, you can differentiate yourself from competitors and enable a highly flexible pricing strategy.
○ Improving Trust
Pricing that makes consumers feel like they are getting a "great deal!!" also contributes to higher repeat rates and brand loyalty.
Points to Note When Using Odd Pricing
However, there are a few things to keep in mind when incorporating odd pricing.
For example, if you create an impression of excessive discounting, there is a risk that the perceived value of the content itself will be diminished.
Also, if the pricing is too complex, it may confuse consumers, so it is important to set amounts that are intuitively easy to understand.
Generally, when setting odd prices, '98' is often used.
Like 498 yen or 980 yen.
Please try using this as a reference!!
Conclusion
How was it?

By lowering psychological hurdles and creating a sense of value, you can achieve pricing that is attractive to buyers.
I highly recommend that creators and small and medium-sized business owners adopt this strategy.
Please experience for yourself the potential that a single pricing change can make!!
Also, there are many other useful pricing methods besides odd pricing.
