The setting is 1962, in an America where racial discrimination still remains deeply rooted.
Tony Lip, who works as a bouncer at a top-tier nightclub in New York, is an Italian-American who is crude and uneducated, but whose strength, bluffing, and love for his family are second to none. One day, he is scouted as a driver and bodyguard for a high salary.
His employer is Dr. Donald Shirley, a genius Black pianist who lives in Carnegie Hall and has even performed at the White House.
Doc (Shirley) is planning a concert tour through the American South, where discrimination is said to be the most intense, and the two set off into the dangerous South relying on only one thing: the "Green Book," a travel guide for Black people.
The two are complete opposites in upbringing, personality, race, and social standing. At first, they clash and are awkward because they cannot understand each other's values, but as they continue their journey and face unreasonable discrimination wherever they go, they slowly melt the walls around each other's hearts and cultivate a special friendship.
