♮01 Foolish Old Men: Opinions on South-Facing Land
We are foolish old men.
Surprisingly, we are also 'capable' first-class architects.
We are sometimes made to sit at housing consultation sessions
held by the architects' association.
The people who come for consultations are serious.
However, half of their worries are usually
made up of assumptions,
not the house itself.
Today's couple was the same.

'This land faces south.'
The husband said this, and
spread out the documents with a hint of pride.
I see.
It seems that when people
find south-facing land,
they feel like they've won at life.
It seems so.
'South-facing land is certainly popular.'
I said this while looking at the documents.
A road on the south side.
It is what is known as 'south-facing land'.
'It looks like it will have good sunlight, too.'
The wife nodded happily as well.
I see.
It seems that today,
they have come to 'confirm the correct answer'.
It seems so.
Humans are creatures who, after making a decision,
want someone to give them a push.
However, today, in my capacity as a housing consultant,
I cannot simply say, "You should buy it."
So, I ask my usual question.
"By the way, have you checked the surrounding conditions?"
The owner ponders for a moment.
"Well..."
since there is a road on the south side,
it's a good piece of land, isn't it?"
Of course, that is not wrong.
There is a reason why south-facing land is popular.
If there is a road on the south side,
no building will be constructed there.
In other words, it is easy to keep the south side open.
Therefore, generally speaking,
• It is easy for sunlight to enter the living room
• The garden is bright
• Laundry dries easily
These are the advantages.
That is why real estate advertisements
almost always
proudly
"South-facing"
is written on them.
It seems that Japanese people
can become a little happier just by facing south.
However,
land is not that simple.
For example.
Even with south-facing land,
if the land across the road is zoned for an apartment building,
the future sunlight might change.
Conversely.
Even on a north-facing plot of land,
if you place the living room and garden on the south side,
you can build a bright house.
When building a house,
the orientation of the land is not the only thing that determines the right answer.
After talking for a while,
the wife said, looking a little relieved.
“So, even on a north-facing plot,
you can make a house bright.”
“It depends on the conditions and the design, you see.”
I replied.
Building a house is a strange thing,
and there is much you cannot understand if you only look at the land.
However,
“I wonder if the living room will go here,”
“Where will the garden be?”
When you look at it while imagining these things,
the expression of the land suddenly changes.
This is because land and buildings
are inherently a set.
The couple folded their documents and looked at each other.
“Shall we take another look at the land?”
With that, they bowed deeply and left the venue.
It was a clear day outside.
It seems that today,
it is a south-facing afternoon.
