[The Giant Scar That Split Japan in Two] The Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line: Earth Romance You Need to Know!
Hello! The Japanese archipelago where we live. Did you know that there is actually a tremendously huge boundary line that geologically splits this country in two?
That is what we are introducing this time: the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line, or Ito-Shizu Line for short!
Running from Itoigawa in Niigata Prefecture to Shizuoka City, this line that traverses Honshu is not just a "line." It is a magnificent fault line where the history of the Earth is engraved, and it is a boundary of the land that even influences our lives and culture.
If you read this article, the familiar scenery of Japan should start to look much more dynamic and full of romance!
1. What is the Ito-Shizu Line? The boundary between the "West" and "East" of the Japanese archipelago
Where is it?
As the name suggests, the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line is a major fault line extending north to south for about 250 km, from the Sea of Japan side in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, through Lake Suwa in Nagano Prefecture, to near the Abe River in Shizuoka City.
This line is also designated as a National Natural Monument as an extremely important boundary that geologically divides the Japanese archipelago into "Northeast Japan" and "Southwest Japan."
Two worlds with different lands
On the east and west sides of the Ito-Shizu Line, the formation of the strata and the age of the rocks differ dramatically.

Just imagine. Across the fault, rocks from hundreds of millions of years ago and rocks from tens of millions of years ago are side by side! It is truly a time capsule of the Earth.
2. The Inseparable Relationship Between the Ito-Shizu Line and the "Fossa Magna"
When talking about the Ito-Shizu Line, one cannot omit the "Fossa Magna (Great Groove)" named by the geologist Naumann.
The Fossa Magna refers to a massive, groove-like zone filled with new geological strata that deeply cuts through the central part of Honshu from east to west. It is believed to have been formed during the process in which the Japanese archipelago separated from the Asian continent and took its current shape.
In fact, the Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line is the major fault that marks the 'western edge' of this Fossa Magna.
The Ito-Shizu Line plays the role of the western wall of the land, separating the hard, veteran "Southwest Japan" from the "Fossa Magna (Northeast Japan)" made of new strata.
3. A "Boundary Line" That Even Influences Culture and Daily Life
This massive fault does not just divide geology; it has also cast a shadow over people's lives and culture.
Use as a transportation route: The ground was eroded by fault activity, creating lowlands and depressions like the Himekawa River and the shores of Lake Suwa. Utilizing this topography, the traditional "Salt Road" (Chikuni Kaido) and the current Oito Line (railway) were laid.
Boundary for New Year's fish: Even in Shinshu (Nagano Prefecture), which is far from the sea, there are regions where yellowtail (western culture) and salmon (eastern culture) coexist, and this cultural boundary is also said to be related to the region where the Ito-Shizu Line runs.
4. Its Face as an "Active Fault" That Must Not Be Forgotten
A part of the Ito-Shizu Line, especially the section within Nagano Prefecture, is currently receiving a great deal of attention as an active fault zone that has caused earthquakes many times in the past.
Earthquake risk: Based on past activity history, it is estimated that parts of this fault zone could cause major earthquakes (M7 class) in the future, making it one of the most critical faults for disaster prevention in Japan.
Let's go see it for ourselves!
You can observe this boundary line of the earth right before your eyes at the "Fossa Magna Park" in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture! Seeing rocks from approximately 270 million years ago sitting right next to rocks from about 16 million years ago truly makes you feel the dynamism of the Earth.
The next time you travel through the central part of Japan, please take a moment to think about this magnificent "Ito-Shizu Line." You will surely see a different side of Japan than you usually do!
