Cold-called 3 new companies and landed 2 meetings! This is repeatable
Today, I went cold-calling with a young salesperson from a client company. We visited 3 "blank slate companies" where we had zero prior connections.
The result: we landed meetings at 2 of them.
In terms of probability, that's 2/3 = 66.7%.
You might think, "No way," but it's not a lie.
Rather, what we should focus on here isn't grit or luck, but
the fact that the results can be explained by a "structure."
1. New business development results are determined by an equation
Whether it's cold-calling or cold-calling via phone, new business development ultimately comes down to this.
Results = Volume of Action (Denominator) × Meeting Rate (Batting Average)
If the volume of action is zero, the results are zero.
Even if your batting average is good, if the denominator is small, your results won't grow.
When the denominator increases, you get results even if your batting average is a bit rough.
Landing those 2 meetings today wasn't a superpower; it's just a matter of "denominator and batting average."
2. So, what's the "trick"? — Conclusion: Just the first step
People often think there's some special secret trick to the Hasegawa method of new business development.
But honestly speaking, there is no "magic" trick.
If there is one, it's just this:
Take the plunge and take that first step.
When I say this, many people say, "Is that it?"
However, it's because they can't do that "is that it" part that makes all the difference.
3. Nervousness doesn't disappear. If it does, that's a danger signal
Calling someone you don't know makes your heart race.
Walking into a company you've never heard of also makes your heart race.
However, from the moment you take action, you can start to "process" that nervousness.
The brain views the unknown as dangerous and tries to stop you from acting, but
because when you repeat the action, it learns,
"This isn't life-threateningly dangerous."
That said, nervousness never drops to zero.
And I believe that when you stop feeling nervous,
it's time to quit sales.
Nervousness is not an enemy;
it is "proof that you care about this one opportunity," and
"a sign that there is still room for growth."
Ultimately, new business development is simple.
It's the same whether it's cold-calling, cold-calling via phone, or referrals.
