Are There Extraterrestrials? The Answer Lies in Pure Land Buddhism

Introduction

“Does life exist somewhere in the vast universe, or are human beings alone?”

In the Christian West, this question has been debated endlessly. Some argue that God created humanity only on this Earth. Others insist that, given what we observe through telescopes, it is impossible for Earth to be the only special place in the cosmos. Still others rely on the Drake Equation and evolutionary assumptions to estimate the likelihood of extraterrestrial civilizations.

In contrast, a decisive answer is already written in the scriptures of Pure Land Buddhism, a major tradition of Mahāyāna Buddhism.

1. The Amitābha Sūtra

The scripture is called *The Buddha Speaks of Amitābha Sūtra*.

Normally, the Buddha’s teachings are delivered in response to questions from his disciples. But in this sutra, the Buddha begins speaking **unprompted**. This means the content was so important that he felt compelled to teach it without waiting for a question.

One day, before his disciples, the Buddha addressed Śāriputra and said:

> **“Śāriputra, in the western direction from here, beyond a hundred thousand koṭis of Buddha lands, there is a world called Sukhāvatī.”**

— *BDK English Tripiṭaka edition*

Here, **Sukhāvatī** is Sanskrit for the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
 A **koṭi** means ten million.

Now, what does “in the western direction from here” mean?

“Here” refers to India, where the Buddha lived. But western direction, clearly he was not pointing toward the Middle East or Europe. Why? Because he speaks of a location **beyond a hundred thousand koṭis of Buddha lands**.

Let us consider this. The west is the direction in which the sun sets. Beyond that direction lies not earthly geography but the realm of the stars—the vast universe. Therefore, “beyond a hundred thousand koṭis of Buddha lands” can only refer to distances extending far into the cosmos.

2. “Buddha Lands” Means “Civilized Planets"

A Buddha is not a “god.”
A Buddha is “one who has awakened to the truth.”
Thus, a **Buddha Land** is a world inhabited by awakened beings—a **civilized planet**.
This interpretation is natural and fully understandable in our modern age.

If, from the Earth (India), there exist countless Buddha lands on the way to Sukhāvatī, then the Amitābha Sūtra is telling us that the universe contains an unimaginable number of intelligent beings—extraterrestrial civilizations. And humanity is simply one of the many civilized planets in this vast cosmos.

3. The Pure Land Is a Real Planet

In both ancient times and today, people often assume the Pure Land is a “world after death.”  But the historical Buddha was not someone who came from the afterlife. He was a real person.

It is far more reasonable to think that the Buddha visited an actual planet—a world that had reached the pinnacle of spiritual awakening—and wished to share that extraordinary experience with his disciples. The wonders of the Pure Land are described in the Amitābha Sūtra, and I encourage you to read it.

I believe the Pure Land truly exists in the observable universe. And on that Pure Land planet, Amitābha Buddha continues to teach the Dharma even now.

4. The True Nature of “Scary Aliens”

When we hear the word “alien,” we imagine frightening beings—greys who abduct humans or invaders who attack Earth.

But the intelligent beings described in the Amitābha Sūtra cannot possibly be such terrifying creatures. Buddhism teaches the flowering of Buddha-nature through compassion and wisdom.

If we fear extraterrestrials, it is not because they are frightening, but because our own delusions project fear onto them. The beings of the cosmos described in the sutra are inherently noble and compassionate. The greys and aliens of popular culture come from societies that are not Buddhist.

Conclusion

Look up at the night sky and gaze beyond the setting sun.
There, as the sutra describes, lies a vast civilization beyond our imagination.
The Buddha taught 2,500 years ago that we are not alone.
As we enter the space age, we must open our hearts to the universe.
Even the Buddha’s enlightenment involved celestial participation, known as **Brahmā’s request**.
