The Mahayana Buddhism Map
What exactly is Mahayana Buddhism? Buddhism, originating in India, spread across Asia via two primary paths: the Northern Route and the Southern Route. Mahayana Buddhism traveled along the Northern Route, passing through China before reaching Japan. All of my articles are based on the teachings of the sects of Japanese Mahayana Buddhism.
Buddhism in Japan has largely functioned as a set of rituals for ancestral veneration. Growing up, my only contact with Buddhism was during the Obon festival and at funerals. However, while staying at home during the 2020 pandemic, I remembered hearing that Buddhism is actually a "teaching of the mind," and I began researching it online.
I soon discovered that Buddhism is not just about memorial service etiquette or history; it also contains fascinating parallels with modern science, such as cosmology and quantum mechanics. Based on what I have learned, I have created this "Buddhism Map" to visualize the Buddhist worldview of the cosmos.

Key Concepts in the "Mahayana Buddhism Map"
This map visualizes the vast landscape of Buddhist thought and its surprising alignment with modern cosmology:
- From Top-Left to Center -
The Path of the Awakened One : From the foundational teachings like the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path to the realization of Enlightenment (Zen) and Buddha-nature.
- From Top-Center to Right -
The Cosmic View : The map illustrates the Pure Land of Bliss (Amitabha Buddha) and the esoteric realms of the Womb and Diamond Realms (Mahavairocana).
- Center to Bottom-Right -
Buddhism Meets Science : The Law of Causality is reflected in the structure of DNA and the origins of life.
- Right side -
Interdependent Co-arising : The fundamental interconnectedness of all things, mirroring the structures of galaxies and atoms.
- Bottom-Right -
Fractal Multiverse : The core of my discovery—the concept that "One is Many, Many are One," where the micro-scale reflects the macro-scale, much like a fractal.
- Bottm-Left -
Consciousness-Only Thought : The exploration of the mind's role in constructing our reality.
