Leading the World with Japanese Culture
Once, when Japan's "MANGA" crossed the seas, it was not merely an export of subculture. The years when "Astro Boy" questioned science and the sanctity of life, "Dragon Ball" ignited the passion for self-transcendence, and "NARUTO" and "ONE PIECE" wove stories of bonds and destiny—these cultivated the sensibilities of countless people around the world. However, in the midst of the confusion the world faces today, should we not be making our next move?
Japan possesses a deep spiritual culture, cultivated over thousands of years, that flows far beneath the expressive forms of anime and manga. Promoting these not merely as tourism resources, but as a cultural strategy to guide the consciousness of a humanity in extreme turmoil toward transformation and awakening, is also the work of solidifying the path that manga has opened with deeper wisdom.
Here, I offer eight proposals to sublimate the Japanese spirit, centered on a Buddhist perspective, into a new standard for humanity.
1. Banners for the blossoming of Buddha-nature at temples nationwide.
We will display the following banner not only at famous temples but at temples all across Japan.
In the 21st century, let us blossom our Buddha-nature and walk the path of awakening!
Amidst the influx of inbound tourism, the message on this banner will surely capture the world's attention and remain deeply in the hearts of visitors to Japan. Temples are not just places for preserving history and tradition; they will convey the Buddha's teachings to people around the world, condensed into a single sentence.
2. Discussing the "Cosmology of Science and Buddhism" at temples.
The universe described by Mahayana Buddhism has a magnificent scale that surpasses even science fiction films and manga. Amidst the dizzying progress of science and technology, such as robots, AI, and genetic engineering, temples will provide a space to re-examine the nature of life and the universe revealed by science from a Buddhist perspective.
By contemplating the countless civilized planets existing in the universe, we must make Earth a place where we, too, can join the galactic civilization through compassion (a heart of kindness) and wisdom (science and technology). Amida Buddha watches over this, and by awakening to the truth of the "nested universe" described in the Avatamsaka Sutra and accepting the story of infinite life within the infinite universe described in the Lotus Sutra, people's hearts will blossom.
3. The success of the "Space Temple" project.
At Daigo-ji Temple in Kyoto, a plan is underway for a "Space Temple" (Joten-in Ko-un-ji) that will carry a Buddhist statue on an artificial satellite to orbit the universe. While major powers use space for military purposes, Japan will pray from space for the peace of the Earth and the tranquility of all life. We are presenting a spiritual approach to the world. This project should remind people that we humans are a community of destiny aboard Spaceship Earth.
4. Discussing extraterrestrial intelligent life from a Buddhist perspective.
The time has come for us to dispel the scary images of aliens, such as "abducting Greys" or "invading aliens," that have spread throughout the world. At the root of Japanese Buddhism is an overwhelmingly positive view of extraterrestrials, which holds that there are countless Buddhas everywhere in the universe. A new story that speaks of encounters with intelligent life endowed with compassion and wisdom, rather than fear, will be the spiritual fuse for humanity to join the galactic civilization.
5. Making the Kyoto Gozan Okuribi a global event.
While there are other cultures in the world that light fires on mountains, we will give new meaning to Kyoto's ancestral memorial bonfire and turn it into an event for the future of humanity.
"Dai" (Big)... The great universe. We are beings within the universe.
"Myoho" (Mystic Law)... The mystery of life. There is life within the universe.
"Funagata" (Boat shape)... Spaceship Earth. Humanity is a community of destiny.
"Hidari Daimonji" (Left Big character)... Paired with the Right Daimonji, it represents balance and harmony.
"Torii"... A gateway to purify the past and step into the space age.
Through the Okuribi bonfire, August 16th will transform from a festival for the citizens of Kyoto into a day for citizens of the planet, a day for people around the world to discuss the future together.
6. Film Adaptation of the Black Samurai, Yasuke
"Oshin" and "SHOGUN" have become global hits. This is proof that the samurai spirit (Bushido), with its values of "patience," "justice," and "honor," possesses a universal power that stirs the soul across races and borders. How about a drama (or film) featuring Yasuke as the protagonist? The story of a Black hero thriving in the world of foreign samurai might captivate people in African nations and provide them with dreams and courage.
7. Pavilion of Awakening
The teachings of Mahayana Buddhism are not mere knowledge, but the very "process of awakening" felt through the five senses. We will build an experiential pavilion consisting of seven domes that fuse the latest visual technology with Buddhist insights.
Entrance Dome ... Step away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and wait for your turn.
Dome of the History of Suffering ... The history of human warfare is projected across the entire dome.
Eightfold Path Dome ... A bright space lined with eight pillars, each engraved with a character from the Eightfold Path.
Dome of the Universe and Mandala ... The stars of the night sky spread across the entire dome, and a UFO crosses by. You leap out into the universe, finding yourself in the middle of a galaxy. Eventually, as the shape of the Milky Way Galaxy appears, lotus flowers overlap, and then the scenery shifts to the Diamond and Womb Mandalas.
Dome of Life ... A hologram of DNA floats in the center, and the scenery inside a cell is projected across the entire dome. Experience the truth of life.
Dome of a Future Society where Spirit and Machine Connect ... A future landscape where AI and robots support daily life through voice commands is projected across the entire dome.
Dome of the Journey to the Planet at the Peak of Awakening ... Board a UFO to visit a planet that has reached the peak of awakening. The scenery inside the dome is based on descriptions in the Amitabha Sutra. It depicts the vision of the Pure Land described in ancient scriptures with the reality of the space age.
Visitors who have touched upon the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism will leave the pavilion with their hearts uplifted.
8. Introduction of Short Meditation Time
Just as there is daily prayer in the Islamic world, we will create a new culture in Japan of a "short meditation" habit to face oneself at a set time.
Radio Taiso (radio calisthenics), which began with the hope of improving the physical strength and health of the nation, will soon reach its 100th anniversary. This time, we will implement "Meditation Time" into society with the hope of mental health and the path to awakening. For example, public broadcasters like NHK could call for a meditation time at a set hour, where people close their eyes for just three minutes and, similar to the spirit of Zen, quietly look into their own inner selves.
This movement originating from Japan will become a catalyst for countries around the world to incorporate it into their own cultures, and it will have the power to gently change the atmosphere of the entire Earth.
Conclusion
Although its authenticity is uncertain, there is a famous "prophecy" attributed to Einstein. It states,
"The future of the world will progress as far as it can, and during that time, wars will be repeated several times, and a time will come when people are exhausted by the final war. At that time, humanity must seek a leader of the world in pursuit of true peace. ... That must return to the high peak of Asia, Japan."
If the power to illuminate the future of humanity resides in Japanese culture, then surely there are more diverse ideas beyond the eight proposals presented in this paper. And when a "cultural movement" that leads the world from Japan in a better direction arises, and human consciousness truly blossoms, this prophecy of Einstein will transcend being a mere anecdote and be fulfilled as reality.
