[Heart Guidebook] To Live the Second Half of Life 'Purely, Righteously, and Brightly'
Dear readers, thank you very much for always reading my articles. This is Don-Kame Runner.
First, let me talk a little about my daily routine today.
[Today's Running Record]
Wake up: 5:00 AM
Strength training: 3 sets of 10 push-ups, 3 sets of 20 crunches
Running: Started at 5:50 AM, completed 10km
Average pace: 7:22 min/km
At 59 years old, what you might call 'approaching 60,' I have a grand goal. It is to 'live through the second half of my life and set a world record for a full marathon at age 90.'
This morning, too, I ran the 10km path while filling my chest with the quiet air of dawn. It is a strange thing, but while running, memories of failures at work or, for some reason, mistakes I made long ago suddenly surface, and bitter feelings sometimes well up in my chest. However, as I move forward step by step, they appear like a revolving lantern and eventually disappear beyond the morning haze. Every time I taste that quiet purification of the heart, I feel as if I am running while deeply realizing, 'Ah, running is indeed necessary for my life.'
Now, to my peers who have run through the same era. Today, I would like to deliver a 'Heart Guidebook' for us in the platinum generation to live the rest of our lives even more richly and lightly.
1. Introduction: The path we have walked, and now
In this turbulent era of rapid change—Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa—we have run through our respective roles with all our might. To all my peers, thank you very much for the long journey up to this day. Please deeply and gently reward yourself for the path you have walked, bearing heavy responsibilities since your youth, and doing your best for your family, society, and the country.
Having passed the halfway point of life, you may sometimes feel bewildered by physical changes or shifts in your social standing. However, that is by no means a lonely thing called 'aging.' It is proof of a precious 'maturity' that can only be gained because you have overcome various difficulties and experienced both the bitter and the sweet.
We are now about to enter the most fruitful and free season of our lives. Let us gradually take the heavy burdens we have carried off our shoulders, and from now on, let us walk honestly, purely, righteously, and brightly according to our own hearts. Perhaps this is a fundamental principle for living, isn't it? It's a phrase I heard so often from my father when I was a child that it made my ears sore. I kept saying it to my own child of the Z generation (though I don't know if they were listening).
2. Heart Guidelines: 5 tips for living purely and righteously
To live the second half of life with a rich heart, I will record 5 tips to keep in mind every day.
First, quietly let go of past attachments and regrets. Both glorious successes and heart-stabbing failures are precious experiences that shape who you are now. Just as I wash away bitter memories of the past with sweat during my morning run, let us sublimate the past not into chains that bind us, but into a light that illuminates the future.
Second, do not fear loneliness, but enjoy it as a rich silence. Loneliness is by no means isolation. It is a luxurious time to have a deep dialogue with yourself and nourish your heart. Please love your time alone and listen gently to your inner voice.
Third, know what is enough and be grateful for the small joys of daily life. The scent of warm tea in the morning, seasonal flowers blooming on the roadside, greetings with strangers. Keeping a heart that notices and is grateful for the small miracles in ordinary daily life is the true richness of the heart.
Fourth, do not forget dignified grace and humor. No matter the circumstances, keep your back straight and do not forget compassion and courtesy toward others. And, especially in difficult times, I want to be a sun-like presence that brightens the surroundings with smiles and humor.
5. Warmly watching over the next generation with a spirit of 'paying it forward' Pass on the benefits you have received from society and others to the next generation. Instead of preaching, let us pass the baton of hope through the way we live our lives.
3. An Invitation to the Future: It Is Never Too Late to Dream
Why not let go of the phrase 'I'm too old for that' starting today? As I mentioned earlier, my dream at 59 is to 'set a world record in a full marathon at age 90.' You might laugh at such an outlandish dream, but it is precisely because I have this goal that I wake up at 5:00 AM every morning, work out, and find the vitality to run.
There is no age limit to having dreams. Starting to study a language, trying a new instrument, or growing beautiful flowers in your garden—it doesn't matter how small it is. Please try to find a 'new dream' or a 'purpose in life' that makes your heart flutter. Because we have known both the bitterness and sweetness of life, we should be able to enjoy the process purely without being obsessed with the results. The most interesting part of life is yet to come.
4. Closing Words: Living Each Day Like the Sun
Finally, here is a small declaration for us to awaken our vitality for tomorrow.
'I take pride in the path I have walked so far, and I welcome this new day with a clear heart. Unbound by the past and unafraid of the future, I will live this very moment as brightly and warmly as the sun.'
May the second half of your life be a brilliant and wonderful journey.
