Guided by a 100-yen shop notebook, I started a 'journaling' habit.
Yesterday, I headed to my local DAISO to buy something I had my eye on. While taking a quick stroll through the small store, I was drawn to an A5-sized pastel-colored notebook.
For the past few years, I've mainly used my smartphone for taking notes and organizing my thoughts, and I haven't been very interested in paper notebooks, knowing I'd eventually have to declutter them. But for some reason, it caught my attention yesterday.
I thought, 'This might be what I need right now,' so I bought the notebook. At that moment, I felt a little spark of excitement.
Recently, I've been feeling a bit uneasy, mainly about my 'way of working.' I thought it might be good to try organizing my thoughts by writing them down by hand for a change, to help release that tension.
Then, after I got home, the word 'journaling' caught my eye on YouTube.
'Journaling' is a very simple method of writing down whatever comes to your mind on paper. There is nothing difficult about it, and you can start right away.
Why not try 'journaling,' a form of writing meditation?
This was something I had done before. I learned for the first time that it is called 'journaling'.
After looking into it a bit on YouTube, it seems some people write stoically every day, while others write when they feel like it for relaxation or stress relief.
By the way, the word 'journal' is said to mean a log, diary, memoir, magazine, newspaper, or minutes.
I decided to try 'journaling' for the first time in a while!

I chose it because I was drawn to the color scheme. It has a pocket on the cover.
When I opened the DAISO notebook on my desk, a sudden inspiration struck me.
'I want to line up another notebook next to it.'
I wanted to use the first one for 'scribbling down what's in my head' and the second one for 'writing down my to-do list'.
And so, I pulled out this notebook.

This notebook had a few traces of past scribbles left in it. I pretended not to notice, opened a new page, and lined it up with the DAISO notebook...

Even though I didn't choose them with this in mind, they are both A5 size and fit perfectly!
Please don't ask why I bought a new notebook when I already had one.
Surely, I needed to buy that notebook at DAISO to create this style.
Equipped with a smooth-writing ballpoint pen, I'm all set!
I actually tried journaling using this style.
Since it's written with the premise that no one else will see it, the handwriting is just scribbles that are barely legible enough for me to read back, and the Shin-sen style is to just fill a whole page with text without worrying about how it looks! I even tried circling keywords that seemed particularly important.
I can't share it publicly, but I found myself filling up several pages before I knew it.
The main things I wrote down this time were:
ใปThe frustrations I'm currently feeling regarding work
ใปThings I've been avoiding facing directly
ใปReflecting on keywords I've received recently
That was it.
Beyond that, I was able to come face-to-face with the 'dreams I want to achieve within three years.' I'm sure I can make them happen...!
By the way, in my second notebook for a 'things I want to do list,' I wrote down whatever came to mind without categorizing them into things I want to do today, things I want to do within a few days, or things I want to do within a few years. I found that prioritizing 'writing it down before I forget' rather than carefully setting rules is fun and also seems to be a good way to relieve stress.
What I thought after journaling is that it provides a 'sense of clarity' that is different from typing on a smartphone or computer. This felt like a sensation close to a type of 'healing.' It seems journaling is also sometimes viewed as a form of meditation. For me, it was a time of healing. โบ๏ธ
To summarize this article, I was happy to learn that what I used to call 'scribbling down thoughts' can be stylishly and coolly referred to as 'journaling'! ๐ฅณ
Even if it's not every day, I think I'll try to set aside time for 'journaling' a few times a week.
You feel unfulfilled, you have frustrations, you have worries, but you don't know what to do.
At times like that, 'journaling' might just reveal an exciting path for you. If you're interested, please feel free to give it a try!
