An Invitation in the Form of a Book, Beckoning You into the World of Copywriting - A Must-Read for Noters -
The other day, a book I had my eye on happened to be on sale on Kindle. Lucky me! While I was browsing other books on sale, I encountered a book that my intuition radar just 'pinged' on.
The cover has a classic atmosphere that contrasts with the title.
When I tried reading a sample, I found that while it uses words that capture people's interest—in other words, slightly provocative words—the design is calm, giving the impression that it will allow for thoughtful reflection.
Looking at the price, it's about 1,000 yen off during the sale (until 11:59 PM on Thursday, September 7, 2023).
The moment I felt it was too good a deal to pass up, I clicked buy immediately.
*I am not affiliated with them.
As a noter, I thought it might be nice to have something like a 'dictionary of catchy words' to use as a reference for titling.
However, I shouldn't just buy it and be satisfied.
To that end, I've already included two words I was curious about in the 'title of this article'!
Even with the same words,
'using them without knowing their effect',
'using them while only vaguely understanding them',
'using them intentionally while knowing their effect',
the energy that draws in the reader's heart will surely be different!
At the same time, I think that sometimes catchy words raise expectations too high, and if the content is too thin for the title, it might give off a 'clickbait' vibe.
Also, since copy that appears frequently in advertisements is basically used for the 'purpose of getting people to buy', it might seem suspicious if not used with good taste.
That's right. Whether you can use it well depends on the writer's 'sense'.
So, what kind of catchphrase do we call 'good sense'?
For example, the page of the vocabulary book I have open now has the word 'counterattack'. Each word is cited with three example sentences, and I see! I can feel the sense in all of them.
Let me introduce one.
'The Counterattack of the Ordinary' (OS Publishing, Masanori Kanda, Hidenobu Taira)
The phrase you're looking for is sure to be found
From 2000 Word Ideas
Ordinary person and counterattack, the gap between the two words is interesting!
Are there really 2,000 such tasteful reference phrases in here...!? (I clicked buy without even reading the obi strip)
What crossed my mind here was
'Mewtwo Strikes Back'
It's the title of a Pokémon movie that is said to be the origin and the pinnacle. The terror of combining the strongest Pokémon with a counterattack is something else...!
The techniques of copywriting were shining in the titles of masterpieces that remain in our memories for a long time, weren't they!
Even so, 'counterattack' is a strong word, isn't it. Will the day come when it appears in a Masome article title! If it's a short story title, it's totally possible.
I want to make this book my partner and learn to master the power of words.
