Instead of aiming for the score your "serious self" can get, why not raise the score your "usual self" can get? -Tips for letting go of perfectionism, for everyone who loves creating-
This article begins with a sudden analogy.
Final exams in your student days.
Have you ever had the experience of cramming the entire test range the day before?
I did it often.
Once the test was over, I forgot everything.
What on earth was that time for?
Setting that aside,
The score your "serious self" can get in the title refers to an evaluation like the test score you get as a result of cramming before the test exactly.
And the score your "usual self" can get refers to an evaluation like the score you get without doing any test studying at all (using only the knowledge you already possess) exactly.
Let's replace this analogy with writing or drawing.
Here, instead of a score, it would be "quality or evaluation".
The quality and evaluation of a work written (or drawn) over several hours or days until you are satisfied is the score your "serious self" can get.
Conversely, the quality and evaluation of a work written (or drawn) in about an hour with less effort is the score your "usual self" can get.
In order to get good grades on tests, to improve your own skills, and to receive "high praise" from others, it is generally thought that the former score is everything. Especially if you are a perfectionist.
However, in this article, I will focus on the latter score.
Then, strangely enough, the things you keep in mind will change from what they were before.
If you were completely forbidden from studying for a test right before it, first of all, you would give up.
In that situation, I thought about what I, being lazy, would have done to get the best possible score in a subject I wasn't interested in.
ใปRemember at least one thing from each class and take it home
ใปIf the class is too boring, try watching an interesting explanation video on YouTube
ใปTry playing a game based on that subject
ใปAbandon the subject entirely and polish only the subjects you like
I don't think actual students can easily make the decision to "abandon" something ๐, but when you think about it, isn't this attempt much more about "deepening the education and knowledge your heart desires" than getting a good score by cramming before a test?
The same goes for creative work.
If you spend time on it, you can pack in as many corrections, additions, and attention to detail as you want.
However, expressions that pop out precisely because a writer wrote them with less effort, or works created from the gentle lines an artist draws quickly, actually have a high possibility of leading to a style that people love.
Polishing what your "usual self" can produce is not about special effort, but about your everyday mindset.
For example, reading books, admiring nature, supporting your favorite characters, organizing your thoughts, traveling, or expressing gratitude.
It's the image of taking the material that your usual self has polished little by little every day, decorating it just a little, and putting it out there.
I believe that this accumulation will, as a result, significantly boost the potential abilities that people possess.
If you were to get serious, you might create something amazing!
Please acknowledge not only the work produced by your "serious self" but also the work produced by your "usual self". ๐ฅณ
