To the me from back then who thought, 'There's no way someone like me could do it'
Before I knew it, I was comparing myself to someone else again.
Seeing someone who worked in the same medical profession report on social media that they were 'making XX amount in their first year of independence' made my heart feel uneasy.
'I haven't even accomplished anything yet.'
The moment I thought that, I felt as if a cold wind had blown through me.
I, too, was plagued by similar thoughts many times when I worked as a physical therapist.
I was so busy just getting through the days that I felt frustrated with myself for being unable to take action, even while feeling a vague sense of unease about whether this was the right path for me.
Yet, whenever I saw someone around me taking on a new challenge, my heart would stir.
'I really want to try it. But could someone like me actually do it?'
I had been pretending not to see those feelings.
At one point, I suddenly thought:
'Why am I always comparing myself to others and feeling down?'
That person is not me.
Their background, values, and the path they have walked are all different.
And yet, I was looking only at the results and blaming myself, saying, 'I'm no good.'
That was when I decided to stop deceiving myself.
I was actually scared, and I didn't know where to start.
Even so, I decided to take a small step forward, thinking, 'Let's try doing this at my own pace.'
I signed up for a coaching course and reread the psychology books I loved.
It felt as if a clock that had stopped was finally starting to move again, little by little.
I might not be able to become like some amazing person.
But I have my own unique path.
I can now believe that if I am moving forward, even just a little, compared to 'the me of yesterday,' that is a wonderful change.
Now, while working as a coach, I face people who have similar worries to the ones I once had.
And what I think is that it might not be that I 'changed,' but rather that I finally became able to believe in the strength I had all along.
So, if you are currently feeling down from comparing yourself to others or feeling like 'it's no use for someone like me,' please, I would like you to take a moment to quietly look back at your own journey so far.
Perhaps there have been many things that didn't go as planned.
But even so, you are surely amazing for having made it this far.
No matter how painful the days were, you kept walking.
There is real meaning in that.
And if you feel like you want to talk about your feelings to someone, even just a little, would you like to talk with me?
I offer free consultations.
I hope that you will come to be able to believe in yourself gently.
