"You're not tired, but your judgment is slipping" | The true nature of brain fatigue that coaches and counselors don't know
I feel that those who aim to be coaches or counselors
are often actually placing themselves
in environments where their brains get tired easily.
Listening carefully to a client's story.
Reading the emotions behind their words.
Thinking about what question to ask next.
Deciding how to handle silence.
Those who work online, such as on social media,
are constantly working on computers or smartphones.
These are all jobs that
fully engage the brain, not the body.
And what makes it tricky is
that this fatigue is hard to notice.
Your body isn't that tired.
You aren't sleepy either.
But,
your conversations become shallow,
you become indecisive,
your thinking becomes sloppy,
or your head feels foggy.
Have you ever felt that way?
This is what is called brain fatigue.
In modern intellectual work, it is known that
judgment and decision-making abilities
decline before you feel physical fatigue.
In other words,
waiting until you feel tired to rest
is already a little too late.
For coaches and counselors,
this fatigue is a very significant risk.
Because the quality of your judgment
directly impacts your clients.
Therefore, taking care of this
brain fatigue is also very important.
For example,
move your body for just one minute between sessions.
Have a little protein in the morning.
Drink sugar-free sparkling water during times when you need to focus.
Make time for casual conversation with trusted colleagues.
These may all seem like trivial things.
But these small acts of care
keep your brain functioning normally.
In coaching and counseling,
maintaining your own state is part of the job.
Those who can notice their own fatigue
can also notice changes in their clients.
Those who can value themselves
can engage with others in a way that values them too.
You are engaging with others so seriously that your brain is getting tired.
That is precisely why
you should feel free to choose to rest and recharge.
Being able to continue this work
in a healthy way for a long time
is, in itself,
the greatest gift
to your future clients.
