Battery Care Charging and Laptop Compatible Batteries
The battery in the laptop I bought used stopped charging.
I wanted to be able to move around the house while using it, so I spent three months thinking I had to do something about it.
I finally got around to buying a compatible battery for the laptop.
Since genuine batteries are no longer available, I had no choice but to buy a compatible one.
When I installed the compatible battery into the laptop, it started charging without any issues.
Lithium-ion batteries have internal control circuits, and if there is an error in communication with the laptop, they will not charge.
I charged it to 100%, but the battery runtime shows 12 hours.
The calculation for the battery runtime is probably inaccurate.
By using the battery until it is completely drained and then charging it again, the battery runtime calculation should become accurate.
I don't think it can calculate the remaining battery level without knowing the 0% and 100% benchmarks.
Also, a warning message appeared while I was using the laptop.
It says that the so-called "Battery Care Charging" is turned OFF.
The warning message appears periodically, but the laptop setting is "Battery Care Charging Mode: ON."
I set the laptop to "Battery Care Charging Mode: OFF," but the same warning message still appears.
I thought it was strange, but I think I somewhat understand the answer.
The laptop likely detected that the battery is not a genuine product and recognized it as some kind of error.
Even though the laptop detected an error, I was still able to use the compatible battery as is.
If a compatible battery could not be used at all, it would be a violation of the Antimonopoly Act (unfair trade practices).
For consumables of all kinds of equipment, users have the right to choose their consumables freely.
If neither genuine nor compatible products could be used, the equipment would become unusable once the sale of genuine products ends.
I don't think most people understand what goes on behind these warning messages.
Batteries also have built-in computers, and communication takes place between the laptop and the battery.
The communication standard for controlling the battery is, I believe, SMBus.
I have wanted to try tinkering with what kind of communication is taking place for a while now.
I wrote this as an article because this information might be useful to someone.
