Seiko-chan Cut

When I was in junior high and high school, the fashion leader was Seiko Matsuda.

Everyone wore the 'Seiko-chan cut,' and I would look on with envy as they curled and styled their hair adorably, ignoring school rules against perms, and chatted with the boys.

Come to think of it, I have been bad at following trends since back then.

I was fashion-illiterate

I was fashion-illiterate. When I was overweight, I didn't know about stores that carried larger sizes, so I didn't know what to wear. For a long time, I dressed really terribly.

Looking at photos from that time, I can't believe how I looked. Once I found stores that sold clothes I could wear, I finally started dressing like a human being, but I was still fashion-illiterate.

I had family members who loved clothes, so I asked them to teach me what kind of outfits were okay, and I followed their advice.

That is how I finally started wearing clothes that I was satisfied with myself.

Learning the concept of 'staples'

It was the concept of 'staple' clothing. For T-shirts, get khaki, white, black, gray, and striped. Cover these first. Then you can match them with anything. That's what I was told.

For pants, get jeans, black slacks, and white jeans. In winter, a denim jacket and an Aran-pattern sweater... that was the advice: master the so-called 'staples'.

Once I had mastered that, I started to hate 'black.' I would realize I was wearing black from head to toe, and it would make me feel sick. So, instead of wearing black, I started incorporating 'white' somewhere.

When I added 'white,' it created a sense of lightness that kept me from feeling weighed down, so I settled on a style of pairing white T-shirts with white shoes.

I liked 'cute'

Besides liking white, I also started to like 'cute' things. When I was a little younger, the 'Mori Girl' (forest girl) style was trending, and I longed to try it out. However, I couldn't quite ride that wave.

For me, it was meaningless unless I could pull off the whole look. There was a mook (magazine-book) published about 'Mori Girls,' and it listed shops for creating that look.

It had detailed instructions on how to combine hairstyles, clothes, socks, bags, shoes, and makeup. But I was a homebody at heart. I lacked the initiative to go to the shops, so it remained just a longing.

As a remnant of that time, even now, when I see things with lace, frills, or tulle, I still want them. But lately, I think to myself, 'Wait a minute.'

At some point, even if I bought clothes I used to admire when I was younger, like lace or frills, they just didn't suit me anymore. Lace and frills are cute, no problem there. I didn't think there was anything wrong with them. I wondered what was going on.

I was made to realize that what is considered "cute" changes as one ages.

On the subject of a sense of unity

Overall "unity"โ€”that is something that occasionally falls apart.

If someone of my age were to step directly into the fashion of young people, that "sense of unity" would collapse. I realized that if I wanted to do that, I would have to incorporate only parts of it, and shift the overall "sense of unity" toward my own age instead.

There are women of a certain age who wear outfits that can be called "cute" and look great in them. I felt that the "story" they possess as "fashion" exists as a "sense of unity".

For example, a "smock." This is a classic piece of "cute" clothing for a toddler. When a slightly older "young girl" wears it, a "mismatch" occurs, and it works as fashion.

However, it is the "mismatch" between the "toddler" and the "young girl" that creates the "cuteness." I realized once again that even if I did it, that same "sense of unity" would not emerge.

For young people, it is "a sense of unity as a story unique to that young person." And for those who have aged, it is "a sense of unity as a story unique to that person as they are now"โ€”that is what is necessary.

I had to factor in the "difference in presence" caused by "my own age." Perhaps there were elements within that "sense of unity" that could not coexist with me.

The "cute" I have incorporated now that I am this age is "pastel colors." Pale yellow, pale green, pale orange. When you add those colors, "cuteness" seeps through.

Whether it is "cute" or "cool," it is being digested within that person's own "sense of unity." Isn't that what is important?

Now is the youngest I will ever be for the rest of my life

Looking at my face in the mirror, lately I feel things I didn't feel when I was young. It is what is generally called "aging."

However, if there is an opportunity to capture this "current" version of myself in a photograph, it is the "youngest" I will ever be in that moment. I cannot go back into the past to take a picture.

I hope to place this "current" selfโ€”the "youngest version of myself for the rest of my life"โ€”within the sense of unity of my own story, and remain someone who looks charming forever. That is how I feel.
