Career Design for Working Dads Navigating Remote and Hybrid Work
Hello.
I'm Satochang.
The daily life of working while raising a child under one year old is more intense than I ever imagined.
While remote and hybrid work increase the time available for childcare, they also...
“blur the boundaries between work and home”
“create a constant feeling of being chased by time”
These are common struggles that can arise from these working styles.
In this article, I will explore how fathers working remotely or in hybrid roles can organize their current work and life, from the perspectives of
career consulting, time management, and generative AI.
Let's think about how to shape your current way of working and living.
A career during the childcare years is something to be designed, not endured.
Once childcare begins, it is easy to feel the following:
It can't be helped for now; I'll think about it when things settle down.
My own career can be put on the back burner.
This is a time to endure for the sake of my family.
However, from a career consultant's perspective,
the childcare period is actually the perfect time to redesign your career.
The reasons are simple:
You are forced to rethink how you work.
How you spend your time is forced to change.
The reason “why you work” becomes clear.
Whether you let these changes sweep you away or design them proactively will make a huge difference in your satisfaction a few years from now.
Articulating your fatherhood and work style through career consulting
The role of career consulting is not just about supporting job changes.
The essence is putting your ideal self into words.
For example:
What kind of father do I want to be?
What do I want to value in my work?
How do you want to secure time with your family?
If you introduce time management or tools without articulating these things first,
you will likely end up feeling "busy but unfulfilled."
Precisely because you work remotely or in a hybrid setup, it is important to pause and organize the balance between
work, family, and yourself once.
The limits I felt while working from home and the turning point
Let me share a little bit about my own story here.
I am also a father who is involved in childcare while working from home.
Even though I no longer have a commute and should have more time at home,
for some reason, I was always anxious and felt like I was doing a half-hearted job at both work and home.
While working, I would worry about childcare, and when I was with my children, work tasks would cross my mind.
I didn't have enough time, and I didn't know what I should prioritize.
The turning point was when I re-articulated the person I wanted to be as a career consultant.
What kind of father do I want to be?
What kind of work style would I not regret?
Using that as my axis, I reviewed how I spend my time and started using generative AI to organize my thoughts and handle the groundwork for my tasks.
As a result, even though the busyness itself didn't change much,
my hesitation and guilt decreased, and I became able to make choices with a sense of conviction.
That was the moment I realized that remote work is not a way of working that makes things easier, but a way of working that becomes painful if you don't design it.
From time management as doing everything in 24 hours to choosing what to do
For fathers raising children, time is the most important resource.
When people think of time management, they often have the image of:
cramming in tasks
managing schedules in detail
but what is needed during the child-rearing period is the exact opposite.
Time management that decides what not to do.
What work is low priority for me right now?
What household chores don't need to be perfect?
Are you putting off decisions that could be finished in 5 minutes?
When you clarify the core values you want to prioritize in your career, consistency emerges in how you spend your time.
Generative AI is a time-saving tool that supports the thinking and tasks of dads raising children.
Generative AI is not a source of universal answers.
However, it is a highly compatible tool for those working from home while raising children.
For example,
Creating drafts for materials
Drafting email content
Brainstorming when you can't organize your thoughts
By delegating these to AI, you can save your mental energy for truly important decisions.
The point is to use AI not to "take it easy," but to reclaim your time and focus.
Why career counseling, time management, and generative AI work well together
These three are useful on their own, but their effectiveness increases when combined.
Career counseling: Determining direction
Time management: Translating into action
Generative AI: Reducing the burden of execution
Saving time without a sense of direction is meaningless.
Without an action plan, AI cannot be utilized effectively.
Precisely because the child-rearing period is one with many constraints, this combination is realistic and reproducible.
The child-rearing period is not a career stagnation period.
Just one last thing.
If right now,
you feel uneasy about whether you should continue working the way you are,
you cannot see the right answer for balancing childcare and work,
you know what to do in your head but cannot take action,
if you have even a slight feeling like that, it is not laziness, but a time to organize your thoughts.
Rather than thinking about it alone, you will find your direction faster by articulating it with a third party.
Because you are in the childcare phase, why not think together about how to organize your career in a way that suits you now?
The time you spend with a child under one year old will never return.
At the same time, the choices you make about how to work during this period will greatly influence your future self.
Instead of choosing between childcare or work, how can you design your life to value both?.
While leveraging the environment of remote and hybrid work,
make career, time, and technology your allies.
I feel that such a perspective is exactly what is needed right now.
Thank you for reading until the end.
