Poem | The Sly Little Bird (Shirokuma Literature Club)
Tearing the petals
I drink the nectar
My beak is sharp and short
Because I have no other choice
What is wrong with that?
I am saying this to myself
I am a hummingbird
Probably, a hummingbird
Because I am so beautiful
Because I am so resilient
I also eat insects
The others do too
Even though the flowers forgive me
Why is it that you
Will not forgive me?
Not that I am asking for your forgiveness, though
I cannot sustain the life of the flower
But I can sustain my own life
Don't call me
A 'nectar thief'
I am a hummingbird
As long as that is what you call me
This is my first time participating in this project,
and I wrote a poem starting with 'Tearing the petals'😊
I am currently obsessed with hummingbirds.
While looking at hummingbirds of the world in a guidebook, I discovered that there is a type of hummingbird that does not drink from the front of the flower (where it is open), but instead pierces the side with its beak to drink nectar directly.
Purple-crowned Fairy
It is the Purple-crowned Fairy.
To me, hummingbirds are the very definition of 'aspiration'.
The magnificent structural color that changes depending on the angle.
Powerful wingbeats, and adorable, round eyes...
A perfect existence that has mastered beauty.
I can never be like them.
However, I felt a little bit of kinship with this Purple-crowned Fairy.
It is just a little bit off from the rules of its world.
But perhaps that is just something humans have decided.
I find that deviation endearing.
It is said that the Purple-crowned Fairy pierces a hole near the base of large flowers that its beak cannot reach to drink the nectar.
They are probably aggressive. Haha
...Ah, that is also my own assumption🤣
But, they are still beautiful.
That is why I still fall for them.
A way of life that exists precisely because they are in the minority.
Sometimes that cannot be fully explained by human logic, can it?
The more I learn about the co-evolution of hummingbirds and flowers, the more interesting it becomes; it seems they have become indispensable to each other over a long period of time.
I believe this Purple-crowned Fairy is also living in a loose symbiosis with flowers somewhere far away from human concerns.
While eating spiders and challenging large flowers.
Even though they are so small...
They are just... absolutely cool!
All hummingbirds are
cute and cool.
