Wildwood Trust to review keeping captive wolves after cull

飼育していたオオカミの群れを全頭安楽死させざるを得なかった野生動物保護団体の代表は、動物を飼育し続けることが適切かどうか、そして今後再び飼育を続けるかどうかを検討すると述べた。
The director of a wildlife charity which was forced to put down its entire wolf pack says it will consider whether or not it is right to keep the animals in captivity, and whether it will do so again.

Wildwood Trust near Herne Bay had to euthanise five wolves - Odin, Nuna, Minimus, Tiberius and Maximus - after pack dynamics between the group broke down, leading to infighting and life-threatening injuries for some of the animals.

同財団の理事長であるポール・ホワイトフィールド氏は、BBCラジオ・ケントに対し、今回の決定にチームは「深く悲しんでいる」と述べ、今後、この慣行を継続することが適切かどうかを再検討すると語った。
Paul Whitfield, director of the trust, told BBC Radio Kent his team was "heartbroken" by the decision, and would now question whether it was right to continue the practice.

He said: "We are absolutely questioning it."

Whitfield added: "Long-term, we would love to see wolves back in the wild, and it's very important for people to be able to see a wolf.

ワイルドウッド・トラストによると、オオカミの群れ（オーディン、ヌナ、そして3頭の成獣の子を含む）間の力関係は修復不可能なほど崩壊し、オオカミ同士が攻撃し合っていたという。
Wildwood Trust said dynamics between the wolf pack, including Odin, Nuna and their three fully-grown cubs, had irreparably broken down with the animals attacking each other.

ホイットフィールド氏は、3頭が命に関わる重傷を負い、もう1頭も重傷を負ったと付け加えた。
Three of the animals had suffered life-threatening injuries, with another also seriously hurt, Whitfield added.

ホイットフィールド氏は、すべてのオオカミを安楽死させないように働きかけたが、「あまりにも不公平だ。みんな苦しんでいたのだから」と述べた。
He said he had lobbied to see if it were possible to not euthanise all of the wolves, but said: "It's incredibly unfair, they were all suffering."

オオカミと人間財団のリチャード・モーリー理事は、今回の事件は様々な疑問を投げかけるものの、飼育下のオオカミは教育に「大きく貢献」し、野生のオオカミの保護にも役立っていると述べた。
Richard Morley, director of the Wolves and Humans Foundation, said that while the incident raises such questions, captive wolves "contribute significantly" to education, and support conservation of the species in the wild.

彼はこう述べた。「いつかイギリスにオオカミが戻ってくることを望むなら、人々が実際にオオカミを見て、オオカミについてもっと学ぶことができることが重要だ。特に、在来種の保護と再導入を支援してきた実績のあるワイルドウッドのような場所で学ぶことが大切だ。」
He said: "If we hope to have wolves back in the UK one day, it is important that people can see them in the flesh and learn more about them, particularly at places like Wildwood, which has an excellent record in supporting conservation and reintroduction of native species."
