このコラムを書くことには、実は少し不安があります。というのも、アラスカにはガーデニング愛好家であり、同時に猫好きでもある方が非常に多いと知っているからです。その事実に気づかされたのは数年前、あるコラムで猫について否定的なことを書いてしまった時のことでした。
I am a bit worried about writing this column because I know there are so many gardeners in Alaska who are also cat lovers. I learned this fact years ago after I made a derogatory comment about cats in a column.

The reaction to that column was swift and the criticism severe, let me tell you. I vowed to myself not to mention feline pets in a column ever again! Today, I am throwing caution to the wind and breaking that vow.

Before I go any further, I ask you to make a guess as to how many feral cats are roaming around the Anchorage Bowl. These are cats with no owners that live outdoors all year.

その数字を知ったとき、私は言葉を失いました。驚くべきことに、アンカレッジ・ボウル（アンカレッジ市街地周辺の盆地）には、そのような猫がおよそ3万匹も徘徊しているのです！
I was dumbfounded when I learned the number. Incredibly, there are approximately 30,000 such cats wandering around in the Anchorage Bowl!

Thirty thousand cats! I don’t know about you, but I find this to be a shockingly high number. I didn’t check on any other place in Alaska, but I suspect all have corresponding proportional numbers. It seems all cities do.

The thing about these cats is they need to eat to survive. I’m sure they get the occasional vole or mouse as they hunt, and I am equally certain some people put food out for them. However, these wild birds, the very same ones you invite to your feeders in the winter, are the feral cat’s main staple.

Wild cats are good at what they need to do in order to survive. These are not cats with bells on their collars to warn birds of their presence.

How can this little northern burg have so many wild cats, especially when getting food in the winter is a bleak proposition? How did this huge population get its start?

もっともな疑問だと思います。何しろ、猫にも犬と同様に「リード着用義務」が課されているのですから。それなのに、一体どういうことなのでしょうか？
I think its a fair question to ask. After all, cats are subject to the very same leash law as are dogs. So, what gives?

アンカレッジでは、野犬の群れや野生化した犬を見かけることはありません。
You don’t find packs of wild dogs in Anchorage, or feral dogs.

そうした謎はさておき、庭に野良猫が入り込んだ場合どうすべきか、インターネットで調べてみました。しかし、見つかったのは猫の世話をする方法ばかりで、気の毒な鳥たちへの配慮や対策については一切触れられていませんでした。
These mysteries aside, I turned to the internet to figure out what you should do if you have a feral cat (or cats) in your yard. All I could find were suggestions on how to take care of the cat with absolutely no thoughts or suggestions given regarding the poor birds.

ネット上で見つかった情報の主流は、野良猫を捕獲（Trap）、不妊・去勢手術（Neuter）、そして元の場所へ放す（Release）というものでした。「TNR」という略語も頻繁に目にしました。でも、TNRでは鳥たちを救えません。これほど多くのバードウォッチャーがいることを考えると、その事実に驚かされました。
Basically, what I found online was how to trap, neuter and then release feral cats. The acronym TNR appears more than once. What? TNR doesn’t help our birds. That surprised me given all the bird watchers out there.

鳥たちを支援するなら、幅広い経験や関心を持つバードウォッチャーの団体である「オーデュボン協会（Audubon Society）」に参加してみてはいかがでしょうか。そこでは、鳥の目撃情報を受け取ったり、バードウォッチングのイベントに参加したりすることができます。
As for the birds, you can help them by joining the Audubon Society, a group of birders with a broad range of experiences and interests. Get announcements of bird sightings and join bird walks.

鳥に関しては、種類の識別や目撃情報の共有、個々の鳥についての学習に役立つ素晴らしいアプリがいくつかあります。中でも一番のおすすめは、コーネル大学鳥類学研究所（Cornell Lab of Ornithology）が提供しているアプリです。
When it comes to birds, there are some really terrific apps to ID birds, report sightings to members and learn about individual birds. I think the best app is from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

野良猫の問題、その解決策は何でしょうか？鳥たちを救うために、何らかの対策を講じる必要があります。
As for those feral cats, what is the solution? Something needs to be done to help the birds.

Deadhead: Once flowers start to fade, you should deadhead them so new flowers will form. This works well on flowers where the leaves are directly opposite. On stems with non-symmetrical opposing leaves, not so much.
