[Short Story] "Love in the Ancient Capital"
Midnight in Kyoto always has something to say. Especially the sound of the koto drifting from the old townhouses along the Kamo River, which for Akari was a symbol of the ancient capital's silence and a faint hope that resonated from the depths of her sunken heart. She spent her days working at a small antique shop in Gion. The scent of old vessels and the occasional eccentric customer—that was her daily life, but a shadow of inescapable despair always clung to her heart. The wounds of the past had bound her tightly.
One day, a man appeared in the shop who looked as if he had stepped right out of a picture scroll. His name was Ren. With messy black hair and eyes that held a certain melancholy, he picked up a phantom piece of Old Imari porcelain that Akari had been searching for all this time. In that moment, she felt as if a faint tremor had run between them. It was like a meeting orchestrated by fate—sweet, dangerous, and redemptive.
Ren was a potter with a mysterious past. His work possessed a strength that seemed to awaken the soul of the earth. Akari was captivated by his work and deeply drawn to the man himself. Ren, too, noticed the delicacy hidden within Akari and the light that had not yet been extinguished, and he quietly began to open his heart to her. Night after night, the two wandered the alleys of Kyoto, talking in hidden teahouses and sharing the depths of their hearts. Every time his fingers touched her cheek, her heart pounded violently. It was a warm joy, as if her frozen heart were slowly melting.
However, their relationship was always built on a precarious balance. Ren knew of the deep despair Akari carried and wished to save her, but at times he was bewildered by its weight. Every time Akari felt Ren's kindness, her past wounds would ache, and she was plagued by the anxiety that she might drag him down with her. Their love was like fragile Kyo-yaki pottery. She feared that with the slightest impact, it would shatter in an instant.
On a night of a sudden evening shower, Akari, not wanting to burden Ren any further, tried to push him away. Her heart began to sink once more into the abyss of deep despair. Ren collided fiercely with the walls of Akari's heart. The sound of the rain was like the cries of their souls. Akari felt that she could no longer continue this painful love.
Akari decided to leave Ren. She tried to give up on his love and face her despair alone. However, with her gone, Ren realized his mistake for the first time. He realized how important Akari's presence was to him. He knew he was the only one who could save her from her despair.
Ren searched for Akari. He went to the antique shop where she worked and stood before the townhouse where she lived. Finally, he found her in the moss-covered garden after the rain. She was sitting beside a stone lantern, staring into the distance. Her back looked smaller than before.
"Akari."
At Ren's voice, she turned around slowly. His eyes held regret, deep love, and above all, a strong determination to save her. He ran to her and knelt down.
"I cannot live without you. A world without you loses its color. I will carry your despair with me, too. So, please, stay by my side."
At his words, tears overflowed from Akari's eyes. She had been waiting for these words all along. For someone to reach out a hand from the abyss of despair. Under the sky of the ancient capital after the rain, the two held each other tightly. Their love overcame the storm, shattered Akari's despair, and shone even brighter.
Ren took Akari's hand and gently interlaced his fingers with hers. His warmth melted her anxiety. Their gazes met, and unspoken emotions were shared. Their "Kyoto Love," having passed through sweet, painful trials and the abyss of despair, now held the premonition of a new beginning. The sound of festival bells echoed in the distance across the stone pavement of Gion. The sound rang out quietly and meaningfully, as if blessing their future. How their story will be woven from here on, no one knows yet. But on the path they walk together, there will surely be no more shadows of despair.
Afterword
Dear readers, thank you very much for reading this story, "Love in the Ancient Capital," to the end. This is LaLaLa.
How did you find the sweet, painful, and sometimes despair-filled romance woven by Akari and Ren? This story was born from my desire to depict two people whose hearts connect deeply and save each other, set against the backdrop of the ancient capital of Kyoto.
In life, irresistible despair sometimes visits us. However, even in that darkness, a faint light always exists, and sometimes a warm hand is extended. I would be happy if you could feel that hope through this work.
As for what happens to their love from here on, there would be nothing that would make me happier than if you, the readers, could weave the continuation of your own "Kyoto Love" in your hearts.
I will continue to devote myself to delivering stories that resonate with your hearts.
