There are moments that make me smile just by remembering them
Just by remembering them,
there are moments that make me smile a little.
At the time,
it was just a misunderstanding.
I wasn't trying to make anyone laugh.
I wasn't trying to tell a funny story either.
In fact,
I thought I was being quite normal.
When I realized later,
that it was a mistake,
I sometimes find myself laughing at myself.
For example,
when I thought a word in a song,
was a person's name the whole time.
I thought 'Tachibana Kaori',
was the name of a person who appeared somewhere.
I was sure,
that there must be a person named Tachibana,
and I didn't doubt it at all.
However,
when I saw the lyrics later,
it was completely different.
It wasn't a person's name.
It was just lyrics.
At that moment,
I froze a little.
'Wait, that's what it meant?'
And then,
I laughed at myself.
Thinking that I had been,
introducing a fictional person on my own all this time,
it felt kind of funny.
Since then,
every time I listen to that song,
I remember that misunderstanding.
At first,
'Oh, I remembered it again,'
was all I thought,
but gradually, that assumption,
starts to feel like part of the song.
Things like this,
happen surprisingly often in daily life.
Mishearing words.
A self-serving assumption.
Misunderstanding the meaning,
and accepting it as normal for years.
Being pointed out by someone,
and finally realizing it.
At the time, it's a little embarrassing.
However,
when I look back on it later,
it's strangely funny.
In my own mind,
it had made perfect sense all along.
I wasn't bothering anyone.
It wasn't a major incident either.
It's just that,
inside my own head,
a slightly strange world had been created.
That part,
when viewed later, makes me laugh.
In conversations, too,
things like that happen.
The other person is speaking normally,
but I am the only one interpreting it with a different meaning.
After the conversation has gone on for a while,
"Wait, are we talking about completely different things right now?"
I realize.
From there, suddenly,
we both start laughing.
It should have been a serious conversation at first,
but sometimes the topic rolls off in a strange direction halfway through.
We were supposed to be talking about health,
but before I knew it, we were talking about school lunches from the past.
We were supposed to be talking about work,
but for some reason, we ended up talking about nicknames from our student days.
In the end,
"What were we even talking about in the first place?"
is how it ends.
There is no conclusion.
There is no lesson learned.
There is no useful information.
Even so,
when I look back on it later,
it is a little fun.
Old photos are also powerful.
The clothes I was serious about at the time.
The hairstyle I thought was natural at the time.
A strangely tilted standing posture.
A gaze that is intense for some reason.
Looking at it now,
I think,
"Was I really going for this look?"
Moreover,
the me at that time,
is quite confident.
That is what makes it interesting.
My past self,
sometimes makes me laugh from an unexpected angle.
Moments that I can remember and laugh about,
are often not perfect events.
A little bit clumsy.
A little bit off.
A little bit misguided.
I was serious at the time.
I was in earnest at the time.
I didn't notice at all at the time.
That is precisely why,
it has character when looked back upon later.
It is not only the beautiful memories,
that become important memories.
It is not only the things that went well
that remain in our hearts.
A slight misunderstanding.
A silly conversation.
A remark that strangely sticks with you.
The mysterious confidence of my younger self.
Those things, too,
are small glimmers of light that remain in our daily lives.
There are moments
that make me smile just by remembering them.
That might be different
from great happiness.
Even if you explain it to others,
they might not necessarily laugh along with you.
However,
it strangely remains within me.
Every time I hear that song, I remember it.
Every time I see that photo, I end up laughing.
Every time I hear those words,
that misunderstanding from back then comes back to me.
When you have such small memories,
daily life remains a little more enjoyable.
You don't have to attach too much meaning to them.
You don't have to turn them into grand stories.
Simply,
there are moments where you think, "Oh, I can still smile about that now."
Just that alone
makes that memory a little bit special.
It would be a shame
to forget them.
Such small moments
exist within our daily lives.
If there is something that happened recently that makes you smile just by remembering it,
it might be your own little highlight reel.
Whether it's a misheard word,
a misunderstanding,
an old photograph,
or a silly conversation with someone.
Even though it's not a major event,
for some reason, it stays with you.
Memories like that
are actually quite nice.
