[PREP Research Review] Educating for the Present and the Future: Addressing the Learning Crisis with AI [World Bank]

The study I am introducing this time is "Educating for the present and the future: using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address the learning crisis" by Jaime Saavedra and several other authors from the World Bank.
Since learning about this research, my perspective on the relationship between education and AI has changed completely.
It makes me feel the potential for future learning, and after reading it, I strongly believe that "if we use AI effectively now, we can provide equal educational opportunities to many children."

By utilizing AI, we can improve educational disparities in a short span of time and deliver personalized learning to more people.
There is shocking data suggesting that there are about 1.8 billion students in the world, and half of them have not sufficiently acquired basic reading and mathematical skills.
With the traditional paper-and-pencil education model, it might take decades to bridge this gap.
However, this book strongly argues that if we skillfully combine rapidly evolving AI technology with education, there is a possibility of providing high-quality learning experiences to many children in a short period.

Because AI can support teachers by visualizing the points where individual students are struggling and suggesting efficient learning plans.
For example, using adaptive learning tools like "ALEKS" allows for a system where each learner's level of understanding and tendencies for incorrect answers are instantly analyzed and fed back to the teacher.
Teachers can see real-time learning data and immediately grasp "which students are struggling with which units," making it easier to provide individually optimized instruction.
Furthermore, in the lesson preparation stage, AI can serve as an assistant for suggesting teaching materials aligned with learning goals and creating curricula through tools like "MagicSchool" and "Ummia."
With this support, teachers can save time spent on paperwork and material design, allowing them to devote more energy to dialogue and follow-up with students.
However, the book repeatedly emphasizes that "AI is not a replacement for teachers, but rather a tool that powerfully supports them."
This is because moving students' hearts and fostering motivation for learning are roles unique to human teachers.
[EXAMPLE]
Examples of AI applications demonstrated by the 'Xprize' project.
What was particularly impressive was the 'Xprize' initiative, which was conducted to bridge the learning gap in developing countries and impoverished regions.
In this project, tablet devices were introduced to areas with an overwhelming shortage of schools and teachers, and by utilizing AI tutors, children were able to learn the basics of reading and writing on their own.
According to the experimental results, the children were able to acquire a certain level of literacy and numeracy skills even without constant supervision from adults.
Of course, adult support and an appropriate learning environment are essential to sustain this and connect it to more advanced learning.
However, in places where the teacher shortage is severe, it has been proven that AI can play a significant role as an 'interim teacher'.
Looking at this example, I truly feel that AI has the potential to support children who have difficulty accessing education.
Furthermore, this book clearly demonstrates the stance that 'follow-up by human teachers is ultimately necessary'.
The message that the combination of 'human + AI' maximizes learning effects, rather than leaving everything to AI, provides a sense of reassurance.

By successfully integrating the strengths of AI and teachers, we can overcome the learning crisis.
AI excels at data analysis, repetitive drills, and creating personalized learning plans.
On the other hand, human teachers draw out students' motivation and creativity through rich communication and emotional support.
What the book suggests repeatedly is that clarifying this 'division of roles between humans and technology' is the key to quickly resolving educational disparities.
AI still has challenges remaining.
The reality is that there are risks such as 'generating misinformation' and 'containing biases,' and many regions lack the necessary internet environment and equipment.
Even so, the authors sound an alarm, stating that 'if we do not utilize AI, there is a risk that existing educational disparities will widen further'.
Precisely for this reason, they point out that 'training to improve teachers' AI literacy,' 'investment in infrastructure,' and 'updating educational systems and laws' are needed simultaneously on a global level.
By taking such a multifaceted approach, we may finally be able to get closer to the ideal of 'quality education for all children'.
