Can a 'Self-Praise Diary' Change Your Relationships? How to Build a 'Gratitude Mindset' That Boosts Self-Efficacy and Makes You Loved
Are you struggling with thoughts like, 'I don't have confidence in myself' or 'I find myself getting irritated with people around me'?
The 'Self-Praise Diary' is known as a tool for self-acceptance. In the Life Design Habituation Program I conduct, students practice this as a 'Praise Log,' but its effects go beyond just boosting self-efficacy.
People who are hard on themselves tend to be hard on others, but once you start noticing your own small changes through a diary and learn to accept yourself, you begin to notice the support and special qualities in those around you that you previously took for granted, naturally transforming into a 'gratitude mindset'.
In fact, many students in the program have reported changes in how they are treated by others, saying things like, 'My husband has become more cooperative' and 'My boss has started to acknowledge me.'
By acknowledging and accepting others, your relationships will improve dramatically. Here, I will explain the true effects of the Self-Praise Diary (Praise Log) and the concrete steps to practice it.
The effect of a Self-Praise Diary is not just about increasing self-efficacy
The 'Self-Praise Diary (Praise Log)' is a habit practiced in the Life Design Habituation Program to foster 'self-efficacy' (the feeling that 'if I try, I can do it'), but a secondary effect is that relationships often improve dramatically for many people.
When you become able to acknowledge yourself, your perspective on others changes, and as a result, you start being treated with care by the people around you, creating a virtuous cycle that enriches your life.
People who cannot acknowledge themselves tend to unconsciously impose strict standards on themselves, which often leads them to be strict with others and fall into a state of lacking gratitude for those around them. In other words, acknowledging yourself is directly linked to acknowledging and accepting others.
In fact, many people who participated in the Life Design Habituation Program have experienced changes in how they are treated by others, such as 'people around me have become kinder,' 'I am treated with more kindness,' 'my husband has become very cooperative,' and 'my boss has started to acknowledge me.'
This is the result of a sensor naturally developing within you that notices the consideration and care of others that you usually wouldn't notice, as well as the fact that the environment around you, which you once took for 'granted,' is actually created by someone.
Dramatically change your relationships with those around you! 3 steps for a Self-Praise Diary
Now, I will introduce the concrete, step-by-step practice procedure for the Self-Praise Diary (Praise Log) to help you accept yourself and dramatically change your relationships with those around you.
-
Write down 3 'small changes' or 'things you were able to do' in a notebook every day
First, at the end of the day, write down changes in your actions or awareness, no matter how trivial they may seem. By finding small changes you would normally overlook as mundane—like 'I woke up 5 minutes earlier than usual' or 'I was able to greet my colleague with a smile'—you will gradually develop the habit of acknowledging yourself. The trick is to
focus on the 'process of trying' itself, rather than the magnitude of the result.
After acknowledging your own changes, look at the 'support from those around you' that lies in the background
Once you have written down what you were able to do, look back at how the people around you were involved in making that action possible. It is important to notice the presence of others behind your changes, such as 'I was able to wake up early because my family let me sleep quietly' or 'I was able to greet them with a smile because the other person turned toward me.' By doing this, you will notice the special nature of things you previously took for granted, and naturally cultivate a perspective that acknowledges others.-
(If possible) Express gratitude to those close to you in 'concrete words'
Once you notice the special nature of those around you and their support, don't just keep it in your heart; express it to them in actual words or actions whenever possible. By specifically saying, 'Thank you for cooperating so I can wake up early' or 'I was happy that you returned my greeting with a smile,' a cycle of gratitude is born between you and the other person. This is not mandatory, but for example, if there are 10 people you want to thank, it is fine to actually tell 2 or 3 of them. Let's gradually practice saying it out loud as much as you can.
You can start today! The first step to being reborn with a gratitude mindset
As a first step to resolving relationship worries and becoming a person with a gratitude mindset who is acknowledged by those around you, first take 10 minutes before going to bed tonight, prepare a notebook and pen, and write down just one thing you were able to do today. You don't need to achieve grand goals. Everything starts with acknowledging your own actions in your everyday life, such as 'I worked hard today' or 'I was able to eat a delicious meal.'
This small page that you can start on tonight will surely be the best trigger to help you accept yourself and change your relationships with those around you into ones filled with kindness.
