Post-Fire Procedures (3)

When your house has burned down in a fire and you are feeling anxious about your future life,
paying millions of yen, even if you know the work is necessary, must be mentally and financially very difficult.
To keep demolition costs as low as possible, the following systems can be used:
・Reduction or exemption of fire debris disposal fees
・Use of fire insurance
・Use of disaster condolence money systems from local governments, etc.
1. Reduction or exemption of fire debris disposal fees
Local governments have systems to reduce or exempt the cost of "fire debris transport and disposal work," which is the most expensive part of demolition work.
Building materials that cannot be reused must be disposed of as industrial waste, but by having the disposal fees fully or partially waived, financial losses can be reduced.
In some places, disposal fees are free if you "transport the waste to a disposal facility yourself (this may also apply to demolition contractors)."
It is important to note that only the disposal fee is reduced or exempted.
You will still need to pay the demolition contractor for the transport of the fire debris.
2. Use of fire insurance
If you have fire insurance, contact your insurance company to begin the process; if your claim is approved, insurance money will be paid.
The insurance money paid includes "damage insurance money" and "temporary expense insurance money," and it is the "damage insurance money" that is paid for demolition costs.
The "temporary expense insurance money" is paid for costs such as hotel stays as temporary housing after a fire or moving expenses, but there is no problem with using this money for demolition costs.
Note that since insurance money is paid according to the extent of the fire, if you perform demolition work before the fire insurance claim is processed, the extent of the fire may not be able to be investigated, and you may not receive the insurance money.
Be sure to complete the fire insurance procedures before starting demolition work.
3. Use of disaster condolence money systems from local governments, etc.
Although the amount varies by local government, disaster condolence money is provided if your home is lost or damaged due to causes such as fire, heavy rain, or typhoons.
To use this system, you need to fill out an application form distributed at the municipal office, along with a disaster victim certificate obtained from the fire department.
※The above is from Risk Benefit.
