[Short Story] Mistaken Identity
"Believe me! I am the child of God. God has entrusted the salvation of all people to me. I am the only child of God."
No matter how much I shouted, they threw stones at me.
Tied to the stake, I endured the pain and shouted with all my might.
"The time will come when you realize my words are true. My words are the divine message bestowed upon me by God. Entrusting this to the people is my mission."
Eventually, the tyrant Cero arrived to witness my execution.
"Kraitof! Do you have any last words?"
I stared into Cero's cold eyes and summoned my final strength.
"Cero! I forgive you! I forgive you for killing me, and I forgive you for denying my words. Because even if you kill me, the truth that I am the child of God will not change. And the time will come when you, too, will realize that my words were indeed the word of God."
Soon, Cero waved his hand, and many blades pierced my body.
As my consciousness faded, I felt a sense of happiness.
I did not bend my words until the very end.
I believed in the word of God to the end and kept shouting that I was the child of God. If that was my life, then I would accept it.
Suddenly, my vision was enveloped in a dazzling light.
"Kraitof."
A low voice that seemed to encompass everything. In the white light, I found a giant shadow.
"God! I believed in your words and kept shouting until the very end! God!"
The giant shadow hesitated, as if trying to say something. I waited patiently to see what God would say to me. Eventually, God spoke quietly.
"Thank you..."
God was thanking me. Before I could even soak in that sentiment, a man in small white robes appeared from beside God.
"Lord. Shouldn't you tell him the truth...?"
Urged by the man, the giant shadow held its head.
"Kraitof. Um, look. It's hard to say, but... well..."
In the presence of God, I could not stop the words overflowing from me.
"God! I gave my life to convey your message to the people! What I did was right, wasn't it?"
At my words, the giant shadow swayed as if flinching.
"Well, you see... that is..."
I waited for the next words with a feeling of impatience.
"It was a case of mistaken identity!"
The man in white robes said that on behalf of the giant shadow.
"Hey, don't say that."
"It can't be helped. Since you won't say it! In the first place, this is also your..."
"It couldn't be helped. I made a mistake."
"Can you really be God if you make mistakes like that?"
The giant shadow and the man in white robes were arguing.
An unbelievable scene was unfolding.
"W-wait a minute. What do you mean by mistaken identity?"
"Well, it was a mistake, and I gave the prophecy to you. In truth, you were not my child. So, I'm sorry you believed my words, but it seems you were wrong..."
Stunned, I couldn't stand and collapsed on the spot.
Mistaken identity? Did I die because of a mistake?
"But, you know? This is because I messed up, or rather, I got the coordinates wrong. How should I put it... I'm sorry?"
"Th-then, what about me? Does this mean I took a mistake to heart and gave my life for it?"
The giant shadow said slowly and clearly.
"Don't mind it."
